Continuing to Build Rather Than Replacing
The transformation of the Agrarensembles Lögow exemplifies an approach to existing sites in which continuing to build takes precedence over complete replacement. The existing structure is not viewed as an obstacle, but rather as a resource. Its history, its scale, and its functional character are carried forward into the future. From an agricultural complex that grew over decades – and which operated as an LPG (agricultural production cooperative) in the GDR until 1991 – VON M, in collaboration with the Agrargesellschaft Lögow Strenger & Baustolz founded in 2022, is developing a new corporate site. Existing structures and new construction, agriculture and new uses, technical requirements and architectural expression are all woven together into a unified spatial concept.
The design of the open spaces also follows this principle: the avenue of linden trees is extended along the property into the village of Lögow. A total of 20 newly planted linden trees complement the existing ones and form a green frame around the farm grounds. Inside the compound, the necessary agricultural infrastructure – including a spacious access road – is integrated into a cohesive unit, at the center of which a bordered lawn provides space for a solitary linden tree to flourish freely. Together with the bench surrounding it, the linden tree creates a deliberate counterpoint to the functional farm structure and – much like a Dorflinde – adds a sociocultural dimension to it.
