If life gives you apples.
Make bowls?

Anyway I am out of ideas what else to do with all the apples uluala.farm trees have given this year.
We have made
jam,
juice,
all sorts of cakes,
different dishes,
dried apples,
eaten as much possible 😂 (I feel like an apple)
and all my friends,
neighbors
and clients have gotten loads.

Definitely need a plan for the future as I am not planning to cut any of the trees down.

Well. To be honest I actually made another animal during this summer. But the horse is still my first sculpture as this little fella is a pure practical piece.

And this is already second edition from this cute little creature. First one I made for Open Farms Day at uluala.farm last year, as I wanted fun container to collect tips to support the farm and wheel throwing lessons. During these days at the farm, lessons and food has been free of charge, but if visitors feel like supporting then this little piggy was a great helper.

This second edition was a custom order, where a long time client wondered if I would make a cat shaped bank. As figuring out totally new product needs testing, I offered different animal, someone I had already tested, a pig. She happily accepted my offer and one really friendly face came to life.

I might have a thing with farm animals 🫣

Most practical object in ceramic is definitely the bowl. Besides useful for serving food and being a great styling object and container for all sorts of things. It can be a good partner for mixing different masks and body lotions too.

Eha Retreat needed a set of bowls for their wellness area to mix different natural materials into magical lotions for the face and body. Two smaller bowls are for mixing and bigger bowl serves as a water container. Useful to rinse hands between treatments, so the constant running water would not be necessary and the room could stay calm and quiet. Every detail is well thought through at that place. So I but all my calming thoughts into these bowls too.

For a small maker, entrepreneur, craft person, tiny brand it is a huge thing when your favorite magazine puts you onto their page 🥹

This year has been beyond epic on so many levels and seeing my own little Uluala at is the best birthday gift ever. Thank you so much for taking an interest and writing Kristiina | Copywriting & turundus and DIIVAN for printing my little story, this means so much. And thank you Lisett Väljaots for taking some great images of me working.

Fun fact: Some years back my work was on the cover of the same magazine, other pieces inside on other pages too, and even when there wasn’t any hint about my little brand, I was beyond proud 🤎 It is just heart warming to see how Uluala’s small creations make a home at your homes.

Flashback Friday ⏪️ Here’s how my tiny studio looked 6 years ago.

Backstage of our rental garage, that we shared with my other half. We both had our motorcycles there, and this tiny 3x3 square meters room was our tack room for all the riding gear, spare tires etc.

I actually started ceramics at my kitchen, but pretty soon I understood that it’s not working and moved our gear out of that tiny room at the garage.

First I had only one work table in there and one wall of shelves. Then added the wedging table and soon after the wheel arrived. Not long after I realized that I needed my own kiln. So it seemed reasonable to sell one of my motorbike, that also equaled more space for the kiln 😁 As to actually bring in the kiln, wedging table needed to move into the main garage space (almost the same amount of space as one motorcycle).

Then more shelves went up, more clay to storage came in and finally I had to start drying my works in the main garage space as well. I think around that time I started to look other options for the studio. I also were a bit tired of the bucket system for using water. There was running water, but only tiny sink that wasn’t even usable for washing up your hands properly.

Yeah. Good times 😄 As tight space puts your imagination to work really efficiently.

What did you do 6 years ago?

So what is Your favorite season? Hot or cold or somewhere in between? Would be happy to hear your thoughts 🙂

My preference goes in this order, first being absolute favorite. And the last bit is about these mugs.

Autumn 🍂 - Love all my favorite colors in the nature, crisp fresh air, especially in the forest and maybe because I was born at that time. Calm and quieter time begin and time to take out my woolen socks made by grandma.

Spring 🌱 - Everything starts fresh, birds are so enthusiastic and excitement for the upcoming possibilities grows.

Summer 🌾 - Amazing sunsets at uluala.farm. Lots of work at uluala.farm 😅

Winter ❄️ - Not so sure about winter.

One thing I know now for sure.

This white set of Not So Perfect mugs and bowls have made it to the most wanted list. Even sent off some to UK today, as travelers who visited Tallinn and stayed at accommodation where they got to use them, ordered some to their home as well. As they said, “Love that they are not so perfectly round.”

So what season you are in love with?

Another cool project done ✔️ Or maybe it’s right to say hot, as the last vases came out from the kiln this morning. Have I now tried all the possible shapes there are for the simple vases? No way 😁 But that was lot of fun, to see where the clay wants to wander.

Thank you Liven AS for this great gig. Forever grateful for trusting my somewhat crazy ideas and giving my hands so much freedom. Hope this happy feeling reaches into the new homes at Iseära 🩶

Here is a second load from the making. All together there are 36 totally different characters in these vases.

Thank you all for so much interest in her. All the kind and cheerful words ✨ A year of a Fire Horse I made my first sculpture 🔥 and now I am reading that Fire Horse year is after every 60 years 😮. One really special horse.

I will write more about her a bit later, as then I have much more to write about. Till then you can admire her golden shine that was drawn by the flames in woodfire kiln, that comes to life when sunlight reflects from her nose.

Patterns in the studio.

People ask me sometimes how one creative mind works. Well I can only say how mine operates. I see forms, patterns, lines and composition everywhere and not only in still life.

When I walk around in the city I notice moments when stranger walks over a crosswalk and red car passes at the same time, how at that exact moment one great composition forms between the buildings in the background, flashing red light and stranger passes the red car. On those moments I take imaginary photos in my head, if I don’t have a camera or I’m not fast enough to take that shot. The image stays in my head. Constantly looking another shot, everywhere.

It’s not so much intentional, it’s just how my head works. Always noticing details and patterns that are formed by randomness in daily life.

Here’s an example how I look at my studio.
