On day 2 of the 2026 Copenhagenize Master Class, our participants got to see what really makes Paris special as a cycling city.

This morning, we started back in the classroom. Mauricio Suarez, architect-urbanist at Copenhagenize, led sessions on micro-design, intersection design, and street reallocation. One of the things he covered was how a single street cross-section changes when you shift space away from cars and toward people.

Clotilde Imbert, our director, took the group through transit-oriented development and bicycle parking, and how cities need to think about intermodality and services, not just infrastructure, to actually meet users where they are.

One of the things that makes having the Master Class in Paris so valuable is being able to see how infrastructure works out in the wild. To prepare today's design workshop, the group studied avenue Parmentier and stopped at the intersection of Blvd. de Ménilmontant / Avenue de la République near Père Lachaise known for causing problems for cyclists.
Back in the classroom, participants worked directly on large aerial maps of Paris, to redesign the intersections and streets they had witnessed in person.

Two sessions down, one to go!

We’ve officially wrapped up our 2026 Copenhagenize In-Person Master Class here in Paris and Day 1 did not disappoint.

The morning started with Copenhagenize's director, Clotilde, and Head of Strategy, Sami, walking participants through the Copenhagenize Index, which is the most comprehensive benchmark of cycling cities ever published. The framework breaks down what the world's top 30 cities are doing across these three pillars:

🏗️ Infrastructure
🌆 Urban design and desire
📋 Policies and enablers

We looked into topics like: what each city scores, what works, and how participants can use what we know about other cities to their advantage.

To start the afternoon, the group got on bicycles and rode through the city to see what Paris actually looks like on the ground. We stopped at important intersections, observed the infrastructure and neighborhood streets, and asked why things were built the way they were.

The day ended with guest speaker Stein van Oosteren, Franco-Dutch urban mobility writer and cycling advocate, bringing his own perspective to the table. One of his key research points is that cycling transitions don't happen through infrastructure alone.

They happen through what he calls the three C's: citizens, courage, and catastrophes. The pandemic was one of those catastrophes. It didn't create the political will for cycling in Paris, but it created the conditions for things already in motion to move even faster. The same happened in the Netherlands with the oil crisis. Catastrophes don't build cycling cities, but they can accelerate them.

A look into the next two days coming soon!

The Copenhagenize team is in Montréal this week for the Vélo Québec conference! 🚲🍁

Arthur Duhamel, Head of Urban Design, and Mauricio Suarez, Architect-Urbanist, are leading a workshop on Wednesday October 21st exploring how data from the 2023 Perspectives mobilité survey can improve how cities understand and plan for cycling at a metropolitan scale.

The session opens with this question: where do Québec's cities actually stand on the global cycling stage? The Copenhagenize Index helps answer it. We hope to see you there!

Want to know if a city’s streets are working for cycling? Don’t just count the cyclists. You should look at who they are.

Women’s share of bicycle trips is one of the 13 indicators in the 2025 Copenhagenize Index. Among the top 30 cities, two thirds report that women make 45% or more of bicycle trips.

A few standouts:

🇧🇪 Antwerp ( #8): women make 55% of bicycle trips for daily commutes
🇮🇹 Bologna ( #25): 52% of bicycle trips are made by women

Ljubljana ( #24) and Oslo ( #18) also rank high when it comes to gender parity.

Where the gap persists, it tells a story too. In Vancouver ( #30), high-comfort protected lanes are still concentrated downtown, and a gender gap remains.

When women ride as much as men, it’s a sign that streets feel safe and comfortable for everyday trips, not just for the most confident riders.

We unpack this indicator in Session 3 of our online Master Class: Usage and Reach. Edition 1 starts October 6, registration open until September 30. Head here for more information: https://www.copenhagenize.eu/annual-edition-master-classes

Last chance! Past participants in the Copenhagenize Master Class have included city officials, transport engineers, cycling advocates, and NGO directors from across Europe, North America, Asia, and beyond. These are all people who went back to their cities and used what they learned to advocate for and implement world-class cycling strategies that transform mobility and strengthen cities at their core.

Our masterclass cohort is deliberately small with 10 people max per edition because we find that the conversations happening between the changemakers in the room is one of the most valuable parts of three days in Paris.

Our Essentials master class covers the fundamentals of bicycle urbanism—from infrastructure and design to communication and policy. Participants experience the city’s cycling network first-hand as Paris itself becomes the classroom. We also offer immersive field visits and case studies, which come directly from the Copenhagenize Index.

Registration for our master class closes this week. We would love to see you September 29 to October 1, 2026 in Paris. If you've been thinking about it, the time to register is now! More details here: https://www.copenhagenize.eu/annual-edition-master-classes

And as always if you can’t join us in Paris, we also offer two online master classes this fall.

Master Class in Partnership with EIT Urban Mobility

A curb isn’t the only design solution for protecting cyclists. And the redesign of Avenue Parmentier in Paris shows the many ways we can protect our cyclists from cars and car lanes. 🚲

Work on the avenue began in March 2025 and ran through the end of the year. The plan wasn’t to add new lanes, but to make permanent what had started as temporary coronapiste infrastructure during the pandemic.

The goal was to secure the unidirectional cycle lanes running along both sides of the avenue while including everything else the street needed to function. In the case of Avenue Parmentier, important street side necessities like bike parking, greenery, temporary delivery parking and bus stops were all used to protect cyclists from car lanes.

Accessible bus stop islands were redesigned so that boarding and alighting doesn't create conflict with cyclists passing through. They also planted 883 square meters of new vegetation, which includes buffer greenery between the cycle lane and the road.

A bike lane that disappears at a bus stop, or that gets blocked by a delivery van, isn't safe. What Paris is slowly building on streets like Avenue Parmentier is infrastructure that accounts for every competing use of the street and designs around all of them at once.

That's the kind of systems thinking that the Copenhagenize Master Class is built around. Not just what to build, but how every element of a street works together and what happens when one of them is missing. Join us for our Paris Master Class this September 29 to October 1 to learn more. Registration for the Copenhagenize Master Class in Paris closes September 7. 🚲

If you're new here: each year, we bring together a small cohort of urban planners, transport engineers, change-makers and more for three days of bicycle urbanism education in one of the world's top 5 cycling cities.

Our Bicycle Urbanism Master Class is built from our 15+ years of international planning experience and the Copenhagenize Index, the most comprehensive global benchmark of bicycle-friendly cities ever published, and uses Paris itself as the classroom.

The Master Class includes field visits, bike tours of Paris, expert guest speakers, and a bicycle policy framework you can apply to your own city the moment you get home.

Past participants have called the class one of the most valuable professional training of their careers because of the curriculum and the powerful conversations with the Copenhagenize team and other participants.

Miss this edition and the next opportunity won't come until 2027. That's another year of your city working without the diagnostic tools, the strategic framework, and the peer network that past participants have said changed how they approach their work.

Join us September 29 to October 1, 2026 to understand what the world's leading cycling cities are doing differently and how to apply it where you live.

If Paris doesn't work for you, two online editions are available in October and November. All of the information is here: https://www.copenhagenize.eu/annual-edition-master-classes.

What would it take for you to feel comfortable putting your child on a bike and letting them ride to school?

It's one of the most revealing questions you can ask about a city. And this is not because children are the only ones who matter, but because it often tells a bigger story about the city itself.

In 1969, 48% of American children walked or biked to school. By 2009 that number had collapsed to 13%. The infrastructure didn't fail children, specifically, it failed everyone who wasn't in a car.

The cities at the top of the 2025 Copenhagenize Index understand this. Utrecht, ranked #1 in the world for bicycle urbanism, has built a network so safe and connected that cycling is the natural choice for families. The streets were designed around the most vulnerable people on them and everyone else benefited.

That's the standard the Copenhagenize Master Class holds cities to. Not "is this good enough for a confident adult cyclist?" but "would an underserved cyclist feel safe here?"

If your work involves making cities more livable and cyclable, there are still a few seats left for the September 2026 edition in Paris. And as always if you can’t make it to Paris, we offer two online Master Class sessions this Fall as well.

If you've ever cycled in Paris, you might have felt like the streets are made up of a language you haven’t quite learned yet.

Here are 5 signs and symbols every cyclist in Paris should know:

🚦 The traffic light. Cyclists will sometimes have their own traffic signals. Oftentimes they will turn green before the traffic lights for motorized vehicles so that bicycles can clear out before cars are ready to move.

🚶 The crosswalk light. Sometimes where there isn’t a traffic light specifically for bicycles, you’ll find your signal to move within the crosswalk lights. In intersections with these lights, you can watch this sign instead of the main light.

📦 Cargo bike parking. Paris has been building out dedicated parking bays for cargo bikes as their numbers surge across the city. They're marked separately from standard bike parking and designed for the longer, wider footprint of a bakfiets or longtail.

🔺 The M12 sign. A triangular yield-style sign above a traffic light that allows cyclists to go through a red light. The signs are inspired by folk law, the idea that everyday behavior in public space tends to precede the infrastructure built to manage it.

🚗 Sauf vélo signs. Sauf vélos means "except bicycles." Posted beneath prohibitory signs like no entry or one-way to indicate that the restriction applies to motor vehicles but not to cyclists. They turn dead ends into shortcuts and one-way streets into two-way cycling corridors.

Taken together, these five signs tell a story about how Paris has approached its cycling transformation: not just by building infrastructure, but by rewriting the rules of the road around the people using it.

That's exactly what we unpack at the Copenhagenize Master Class this September 29 to October 1 in Paris. Three days inside one of the world's top 5 cycling cities, guided by the team behind the Copenhagenize Index. If you can’t make it to Paris, we still have space for our virtual master classes which you can take from anywhere in the world.
