Last week, we met with building performance engineers, TGA Consulting, to discuss the project brief for improving the thermal performance and sustainability of Wooler United Reformed Church.

As a valued part of the local community, the church provides more than a place of worship; it is a space for connection, gathering and shared experiences. As with many listed buildings, improving energy efficiency requires a carefully considered approach that balances environmental performance with the conservation of the building’s historic character and significance.

These initial discussions mark an important step towards a more sustainable future for the church, helping to safeguard this valued community asset and ensure it continues to serve local people for generations to come.

This considered renovation and loft conversion in the heart of a Northumberland Village was designed to unlock an additional floor of living accommodation within the existing property and within the sensitivity of a conservation area.

The proposals reconfigure the existing flat, improve circulation and natural light, and make efficient use of the existing roof volume to create new, functional spaces and a panoramic roof terrace.

If you are thinking about extending or transforming your property? Please get in touch to discuss what could be possible.

We recently visited the completed conversion of this former coach house and stables, and it was fantastic to see the finished result.

The fabulous vaulted ceilings and exposed timber trusses create real drama and volume, while the carefully considered finishes bring a contemporary feel without losing the charm and character of the original building.

It’s always rewarding to return to a project and see how the spaces have been brought to life by the owners. A wonderful example of how sensitive design can transform a historic building into a beautiful, characterful home.

Photos from our early site visit for a new project, and one we’re particularly excited to get started on.

We’ll be refurbishing a collection of old barns and farm cottages, giving the buildings a new lease of life.

The characterful barns are surrounded by wildflowers and butterflies. It’s a really special setting, and we’re excited to get started!

More to come soon.

A look back at our oak frame extension to the Grade II listed Northumberland Arms in Felton — a sensitive addition designed to sit comfortably alongside this much-loved historic coaching inn.

The use of a traditional oak frame, paired with generous glazing, creates a warm and welcoming extension that complements the character of the existing building without competing with it.

Years on, it’s a project that still looks just as good — a reminder that thoughtful, context-led design can age beautifully.

Swallows Rest has recently gone on the market, which gave us a great excuse to look back at one of our favourite projects.

Replacing a tired 1960s farm cottage, the brief was to create a contemporary home that made the most of its incredible Northumberland setting. The result is a light-filled family home that feels connected to the landscape, with natural materials, generous glazing and views that change with every season.

It's always rewarding to see a project years after completion and see how it's become a real home.

If you're thinking about designing a one-off home or replacing an existing house in Northumberland, we'd love to help.

Planning & Listed Building Consent Approved

We’re delighted to share that planning permission and listed building consent have been granted for the renovation and restoration of Adderstone Hall.

This exceptional Grade II* listed country house has been included on the Heritage at Risk Register, making this approval an important milestone in securing the building’s long-term future. Our proposals have been carefully developed to conserve and repair the hall’s historic fabric while introducing the sympathetic interventions needed to return it to sustainable use.

We look forward to seeing this remarkable building brought back to life.

Planning approved!

We’re delighted to have been part of the design team for the successful planning approval of the conversion of a traditional agricultural hemmel into a contemporary two-bedroom home in the Northumberland countryside.

The design carefully preserves the character of the existing agricultural building, celebrating its original stone walls while introducing complementary timber cladding and slim-profile aluminium windows. The proposal is a sensitive blend of traditional and contemporary architecture, creating a sustainable home that sits comfortably within its rural setting.

A great collaborative effort, with planning consultancy expertly led by MICHIE GROUP LLP

Nearly there now…With the structure complete and the external envelope coming together, this extension is now entering the final stages of construction. It’s always exciting to see a project move from drawings and ideas into a finished space that will transform how our clients live in their home.
