From inspiration to illustration. From illustration to something to treasure. ✍🏻
These photographs capture me creating the Gotland design, bringing together layers of illustration, colour and detail to tell a story inspired by my Swedish heritage.
I have always chosen to work by hand. During my set and costume studies, we could take the route of computer-aided design or continue drawing by hand. I knew which path felt right for me.
I have wonderful memories of my time as an architectural apprentice at Tengbom Arkitekter in Stockholm, where Senior architects taught me to draw plans and elevations by hand. One of my early assignments was drawing the new washrooms into the architectural plans for Stockholm Concert Hall - a building designed by Ivar Tengbom and inaugurated in 1926.
Every detail mattered, even the ones most people might never notice.
Looking back, I can see how those early experiences shaped the way I work today. My background in special design, illustration and visual storytelling continues to influence how I compose a scene, build layers and translate inspiration into original designs.
Each of my Nina D designs begin with a drawing and develops into a collection of luxury tableware and homeware, made to bring stories, memories and a little more meaning to the table.
For me, the beauty is not only in the finished piece. It is also in the process, the hands behind it and the story that lives within it. 💛
