Storage isn't the most glamorous part of a renovation...

But it can completely change how your home works.

Think built-in cupboards, under-stair storage, fitted alcoves, and bespoke carpentry designed around the things you actually need to store.

Coats. Shoes. Children's belongings. Work equipment. Kitchen appliances.

When everything has a proper place, even a smaller home can feel calmer, more organised, and more spacious.

Good renovation isn't always about adding more.

Sometimes it's about using every inch better.

Sometimes, you really do need more space.

But a successful extension shouldn't start with:
β€œHow big can we make it?”

It should start with:
β€œWhat do we need this new space to do?”

A carefully planned extension could create a larger kitchen, family hub, dining area or the additional room your household genuinely needs.

The goal isn't simply adding square metres.

It's creating space that improves the way you live.

That garage full of boxes.

The loft you rarely use.

The dining room that's occupied three times a year.

Could the space you're looking for already be inside your home? πŸ‘€

Before adding more, it's worth looking honestly at how you're using what you've already got.

Depending on your property, an underused space could potentially become an office, guest room, playroom or additional family space.

Sometimes the smartest home improvement isn't making your property bigger.

It's making more of it usable.

Do you really need a bigger home?

Or could the home you already have simply work better?

Sometimes the problem isn't a lack of square footage β€” it's how that space is arranged.

An awkward layout, unused room or poor connection between spaces can make a perfectly good home feel too small.

Before automatically thinking about an extension, look at what you already have.

Could reconfiguring the layout make the difference?

Your autumn property check shouldn't stop at the back door.
Garages, extensions, garden rooms, porches, and outbuildings all face the same changing weather as your main home.
Take a few minutes to check:
βœ”οΈ Roofs and roof edges
βœ”οΈ Exterior timber
βœ”οΈ Guttering and drainage
βœ”οΈ Doors and windows
βœ”οΈ Signs of damp or water ingress
If you've invested in creating additional space, maintaining it properly helps protect that investment for years to come.
πŸ‘‰ More practical autumn advice is waiting in our latest Jigsaw Construction Surrey blog.

Here's a surprisingly useful thing to do next time it rains...
Go outside. β˜”
Take a look at where the water is actually going.
Is it draining away from your home β€” or collecting against walls and across patios?
Watch for:
πŸ’§ Standing water
πŸ’§ Blocked gullies
πŸ’§ Overflowing drains
πŸ’§ Sunken paving
πŸ’§ Water flowing towards the house
πŸ’§ Persistent damp areas
Drainage is something we rarely notice when it's working properly.
When it isn't, that's a different story.
September is a great time to spot potential problems before the wetter months ahead.

Your brickwork protects your home 365 days a year β€” so give it a closer look before winter. 🧱
Mortar can gradually deteriorate through years of exposure to the weather.
Look out for crumbling or missing mortar, damaged bricks, persistent damp areas or cracks that appear to be changing.
Why does it matter?
Damaged pointing can allow more moisture into the wall, and colder, wetter weather can make existing problems worse.
Not every crack means there's a serious problem, but significant or changing cracks deserve professional attention.

🍁 Autumn leaves look beautiful on the trees.
In your gutters? Not so much.
Gutters have an important job: directing rainwater safely away from your property.
Leaves and debris can restrict that flow, potentially causing water to overflow onto walls or collect where you don't want it.
Before the leaves really start falling, check for:
βœ”οΈ Blockages
βœ”οΈ Sagging guttering
βœ”οΈ Leaking joints
βœ”οΈ Loose sections
βœ”οΈ Signs of water running down exterior walls
It's a simple autumn check that can make a big difference when the heavier rain arrives.
πŸ“Œ Save this as a reminder for your September home maintenance list.

When did you last really look at your roof? 🏠
Your roof takes the brunt of the British weather, but it can be easy to forget about it until something goes wrong.
Before autumn weather sets in, look out for:
πŸ”Ž Slipped or missing tiles
πŸ”Ž Cracked tiles
πŸ”Ž Damaged flashing
πŸ”Ž Changes to the roofline
πŸ”Ž Damp or staining inside the loft
You don't need to climb onto the roof yourself β€” many warning signs can be spotted safely from ground level or from inside your loft.
If something doesn't look right, getting it checked early could prevent a relatively small repair becoming a much larger one.
