When hand-painting a kitchen door, following the grain is about keeping your brushwork consistent so the horizontal and vertical sections flow together without leaving visible brush marks, ridges or an obvious change in direction.

The trick is to work with the grain, control your paint and blend the meeting points.

It’s not just about getting paint onto the surface. It’s about how you finish it.

Brushing on and laying off in the direction of the grain is a small but important part of achieving a beautiful hand-painted finish.

Apply evenly, then gently lay off with the tips of your brush, keeping your strokes consistent and following the grain.

It’s these little details that make all the difference.

It’s lightly holding the brush at just the right angle and allowing it to glide softly down.

I’m using an Arroworthy Classic brush which I find perfectly suited for this type of finish.

Remove as much paint from the brush as possible because this isn’t about applying paint, it’s about gently refining the surface and creating a timeless, even, natural finish 🫠🎨✨

Painting around the hinges and internal reveals is made easier with these brushes. 😮‍💨 I’m using a Daler Rowney short flat System 3 artist brush for the details, it’s a must have! And a Dulux sash brush for the long straights. Life is too short for cheap, crappy brushes. You get what you pay for and it makes your life easier!

This finish was achieved without any added paint conditioner! I’d run out so added a splash of water to get the consistency. Unless my eyes 👀 deceive me, it’s actually looks better without. That’s interesting 🧐 Every day is a school day ✨👏🎨

Laying off is about light, confident strokes, not endlessly fiddling with the paint.

Get it on evenly, lay it off, then leave it alone.
