Your home might look beautiful. But have you thought about what it’s made of?
We spend so much time choosing how our homes look.
The colours.
The fabrics.
The furniture.
The finishes.
But how often do we stop to ask what’s actually in the products we’re bringing into our homes?
The materials we choose matter.
Some furniture, flooring, paints and finishes can release chemicals into our indoor air, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde.
What we choose can influence the quality of the environment we live in every day.
Did you know?
Most sofas are so toxic (in the uk) they are treated as hazardous waste and are sent to specialist waste incineration process
A beautiful finish doesn’t tell you the whole story.
A wooden cabinet might be solid timber, or an engineered board bonded with adhesives. A gorgeous paint colour might have very different emissions from another.
The details behind the finish deserve just as much attention as the finish itself.
Ask the supplier or your designer to check!
So, what should you look for?
Lower-emission paints and finishes.
Furniture with transparent material and adhesive specifications.
Natural, durable materials where they suit the application.
Products designed to last, rather than be replaced in a few years.
And remember: natural doesn’t automatically mean non-toxic, and synthetic doesn’t automatically mean harmful.
It’s about understanding the product, not simply its label
Sustainable luxury is about more than how a home looks.
It’s about creating spaces that feel wonderful to live in, choosing thoughtfully, investing in quality and considering the impact of our decisions.
Because good design should care for more than the room itself.
Design with intention. Live well.
The next time you buy something for your home, look beyond the label and ask:
What is it made of?
How will it wear?
And is it the right choice for the home I want to create?
Small, informed decisions can make a meaningful difference to the spaces we live in.
