7 days till the Scottish Graveyard Futures symposium with speakers from Historic Environment Scotland, Edinburgh World Heritage, Tayside Biodiversity Partnership, Fife Council, DTAS, Caring for God's Acre, and Scotland's Churches Trust.

So many different perspectives coming together in this event, in that intersection of natural and built heritages, shared spaces between the living and the dead, holding memory, nature and stories of our communities.

As ownership, needs and perspectives change, how can we share resources, opportunities, skills and knowledge to foster thriving futures of culture and wellbeing across Scotland's diverse places. Come and join the conversation, Thurs 5th Nov. In person & online. Info & booking at

What are the diverse futures for historic graveyards in Scotland?

So much is changing as worship declines and values of greenspace and intangible cultural heritage are increasingly recognised, bringing new voices into the conversation.

On 5th November, we are bringing together some leading lights from heritage, nature, communities and public bodies at the HES Engine Shed to share insights and imagine futures. Join us online or in person using the link below.

Super-excited already for next Sat when I am joined by a stellar panel for a challenging discussion on the road to the circular economy in Scottish construction at the The Scottish Ecological Design Association conference 2026 in Falkland. Still a few tickets left if you're quick!

Definately tickets to join online for the evening film. See SEDA website.

Over the last 6 months, Arc and Rebearth have been interviewing people close to the soil in the catchment where we live, and forming portraits of 8 different soils in film, image and poem, as part of a research project into Land Use and Net Zero with the The James Hutton Institute. It's proved a fascinating project and powerful development of our practice.

Join us on Sunday 27th September when we will introduce the first showing of our film with audience discussion, 3.30-5pm.
In person at the Corn Exchange in Cupar, Fife as part of River Eden Day

The Haig bonded warehouse in Markinch is a striking Art Deco masterpiece, with all the investment in optimism and swag of the 1930’s. It is in sound condition, holds 5,280 tonnes of embodied carbon, but has no future.

We worked with Fife Council, Historic Environment Scotland and a commercial developer to design 6 different ways the building could be adapted for re-use, none of which are viable under current investment conditions.

If our generation is to be an effective bridge between our past and our future, we need to rediscover that Art Deco optimism for change, get serious about the circular economy and change the built environment investment landscape.

It's all in our latest blog. Link below

Last week we kicked off the construction stage of Annan Harbour’s regeneration, which is not just a brilliant intervention by local people to make a generational impact on their town, but a reflection on the changing dynamics of community empowerment, the re-balancing of our relationship with nature and a cultural intervention of hope, with wider relevance.

Read our reflection on this, and the relevance of Kofi Annan's address to the United Nations, in our latest blog.

What are the steps we need to take to make our traditional buildings flood ready in a time of rapid climate change?

Oliver Goddard, conservation architect at Arc, was invited to speak on this topic at the Scottish Lime Centre Trust's 'Building Conservation Masterclass'. A few months on, in our latest blog, Ollie reflects on the wet winter just passed, the challenges ahead for practices and how we can improve the flood resilience of our communities and built environment.

There are those great days in a project when the things you have been imagining in drawings and words for years start to become reality. This week we are delighted to appoint Cubby Construction as main contractor for the Annan Harbour restoration project.

Over the next two years, this wonderful but derelict harbour and former town dump will be transformed into a vibrant community and visitor facility within a restored natural environment.

Total respect for all the hard work by the community client Annan Harbour Action Group - Charity Sc46732 and the wider team including Narro , Harley Haddow, HarrisonStevens, Thomson Gray. Cragg Management, Aegea. Graphics by Dalgety Visuals.
