๐ง Rice cooking tip โ
Soggy rice on top and a crust stuck to the bottom? Your rice cooker might need a little help ๐
Here are the common reasons:
1. Too much water
The biggest cause of soggy rice. Measure properly rather than guessing.
2. Using the wrong cup
The cup supplied with your rice cooker is usually smaller than a normal measuring cup. Use the supplied cup for the rice and the matching water marks inside the pot.
3. Not rinsing your rice
Excess surface starch can make it gummy and sticky. Rinse ordinary white rice in several changes of cold water, then drain before measuring the cooking water.
4. Different rice, same method
Jasmine, basmati, short-grain and brown rice donโt all need the same amount of water or cooking programme.
5. Too little water
The bottom can dry out and form a crust before the rice cooks properly.
6. Leaving it on โkeep warmโ too long
The rice at the bottom can gradually dry out and harden.
7. Pressing โcookโ again
Once it switches to warm, another cooking cycle can scorch the base.
8. A worn or scratched inner pot
Damaged non-stick coating makes rice more likely to stick. Use a rice paddle rather than metal utensils.
Follow your cookerโs instructions for resting, then gently fluff the rice. With a basic cooker, a short rest with the lid closed often helps the moisture settle evenly.
A thin golden crust can happen in some basic cookers, but a thick, burnt layer needs investigating!
