Cobbles or setts? Most of us use the words interchangeably, but they're not the same thing.

Cobbles are usually naturally rounded stones, shaped over time by weathering and water. They're irregular and full of character, which makes them lovely for borders, edging, informal paths and feature areas.

Setts are quarried stone blocks, cut or dressed into flatter, more consistent shapes. They give a more stable, structured surface, which is why they're the usual choice for driveways and patios.

Heritage style paving is harder to get right than it looks. It's not just about the stone. It's the finish. The laying pattern. The edges. The way light catches a surface that has a little depth to it.

Get those things right and almost any stone will sit beautifully in a period setting. Get them wrong and even the most expensive slab will look like it was added rather than always there.

Featured in Shire Magazine - a look inside a stunning renovated family home near Wrexham, where developer chose our Castle Blend Paving for both the wrap-around patio and the indoor bar area.

Castle Blend is a reclaimed York stone reproduction in a natural grey-green blend — and on this project, it did double duty, flowing seamlessly from the patio right through to the bar area indoors for a genuine indoor/outdoor look.

As developer Mike put it: the result gives that "been there forever" look, at around half the price of natural stone, with far easier laying thanks to consistent slab thickness.

A listed 1703 home in the South Downs. An oak-framed pool house built to blend into the national park around it. And a hallway that Mr and Mrs Shenton say "works perfectly" thanks to Old Provence Terracotta Tiles. 🌾

Their brief was simple but exacting: a new pool building sympathetic to the setting of their historic home, using materials that felt like they belonged. They finished the hallway and cloakroom in Old Provence, the kitchen in Lancashire Mill, and the pool room in Antique Honey Cathedral Limestone.

In their own words:

"We decided to use terracotta tiles for the hallway, downstairs cloakroom and shower room as the size and colour works perfectly against the oak beams and doors."
