A library deserves more than just bookshelves and a collection of classics. Considered architecture and precise detailing give it focus, identity and a sense of permanence.
This room began with basic shelving and felt devoid architectural character. We removed everything, designed a new chimney breast and specified the limestone fireplace as a central focal point. The bespoke joinery was designed to flank this, with considerations extending from the library ladder and lighting to the proportion of every opening and profile details. The cornice, doors, architrave and skirting were commissioned to carry consistent architectural language throughout the room.
The furnishings were approached with equal precision. A dedicated workspace with bespoke sweeping ‘kidney’ desk at its centre was balanced with generous seating, for more informal moments of reading and relaxation. We introduced a variety of pieces, exploring differing design eras, and combined textiles and finishes to enhance the formal architecture. Scale and proportion bind the composition together, preserving a sense of order without making it predictable.
