I am trained as a building conservator and stone mason as well is having a degree in fine Art Sculpture. In my career have worked on everything from simple garden walls to listed buildings, cathedrals and even roman remains. using natural lime mortar dramatically improves the look of any building as well as improving its performance and often value. Repointing this beautiful 18th-century building in Blackford.
Over the years, the masonry had accumulated a real mixture of different mortars, colours and repairs
We carefully removed the various old mortars and replacing them with sympathetic lime mortar has really smartened up the building and brought some consistency back to the front elevations.
It's a good example of how much difference sympathetic repointing can make without changing the character of an old building.

Lime repointing in Ditcheat 🏡
This beautiful house has suffered not only from the effects of age, but also from some rather unfortunate repairs over the years — including thick cement ribbon pointing and, somewhat creatively, clear silicone being used to fill tight joints and cracks in the masonry!
We’ve carefully removed the inappropriate materials and carried out lime repointing and mortar repairs using traditional methods sympathetic to the building.
The difference is remarkable. The masonry can breathe again, the character of the house has been restored, and the whole building has been brought back to life.
Another example of how the right materials and a sympathetic approach can make such a difference to an old building.

This ancient barn was converted into a dwelling around 1800 and, after more than 200 years, it was definitely in need of some TLC!

There were plenty of cracks and areas of failed mortar that needed replacing, while the lower section of the wall was packed with old ivy roots.

Carefully removing the failed pointing and replacing it with lime mortar not only transforms the appearance, but allows the old masonry to dry out and breathe as it was designed to. 🧱🌿

Another lime repointing project completed in Charlton Musgrove
These beautiful semi-detached houses were built in 1887 and had seen very little TLC over the years.
Once the ivy was removed and the old pointing carefully taken out, we repointed the walls with traditional lime mortar.
It’s amazing what a difference it has made. The buildings have been completely transformed and brought back to life, while retaining their original character.

It's not all pointing!

I've just replaced this Doulting stone window mullion in Evercreech. The property had been burgled and the window surround was significantly damaged when the wooden frame was forced.

Happy to say the customer is absolutely delighted with the result — and I've even arranged for a joiner to come in and replace the timber window too. Full restoration, start to finish! ✅

I've been in Bayford this week, continuing the careful restoration of this beautiful 18th century walled garden and helping bring it back to its former glory.
Decades of weathering and neglect had taken their toll, with sections of the wall beginning to fail and areas at risk of collapse. Some of the original bricks had deteriorated beyond repair and needed replacing, while many others could thankfully be conserved and retained. Almost all of the old pointing had failed and required raking out and repointing with appropriate lime mortar.
It’s always rewarding working on historic masonry like this. The aim is not to make it look new, but to preserve its character and ensure it stands strong for many more generations.

We have just finished this small but rewarding project on an end terrace in Street, Somerset. We carefully removed the inappropriate cement strap pointing, carried out localised mortar repairs, and repointed the masonry using a traditional lime mortar.
The difference is more than just visual allowing the building to breathe again is key to its long-term health. A great example of how the right materials and a bit of care can really bring a building back to life

I was lucky to have been part of the team behind the renovation of The Prickly Pear (formerly The Castle) in Burton!
During the work, something fascinating was uncovered, once the render was removed, many of the stones were revealed to be worn completely smooth. This is because they were recycled from an old stable floor! 🪨
I believe those stones may have originally come from the stables of Bruton Abbey, taken after the Reformation. The building itself, long thought to be 18th century, could actually date back to the 16th century and the stone itself significantly older than that.
History hiding in plain sight!
