Saved an AI image of your dream room? Bring it along.

More and more clients are arriving at our first meeting with one, and we love it. It shows us the mood, the colours and the feeling you’re after far better than words can.

What it can’t show is your actual room.

An AI image doesn’t know where your windows sit, how much space you really have or whether that bath even exists. Often it doesn’t.

So we treat it as a brief, not a blueprint. We work out what you love about the picture, measure the real space, and design something that captures that same feeling with real products and a layout that works for everyday life.

Sometimes it lands close to the image. Sometimes it ends up better.

Some decisions in a renovation you can change later. Some you really can’t.

Paint, cushions, even most furniture can evolve over time. But where the kitchen sink goes, where the steel sits, where the windows are, how the lighting is wired: once the plaster’s on and the floor’s down, those are fixed. Or fixable only at real expense.

That’s why so much of our work happens here, on paper, long before anything happens on site. Where the sink sits. How much space you need around the island. Which way the doors open and how you’ll move through the room when you’re cooking, chatting or carrying the shopping in. It’s a few millimetres on a drawing, but it shapes how a kitchen works every single day.

It’s exactly why we’d rather be involved before the builder. The decisions you can’t undo deserve the most thought.

Some fabrics feel like they’ve always belonged in a room.

Colefax and Fowler is one of the names we come back to again and again. Their prints have that rare quality of feeling classic without ever looking dated, which is exactly what we want for homes that need to feel right for years, not just for one season.

Here, a soft blush linen with ginkgo leaves and scattered blossom brings warmth to a light-filled bay, while a painterly woodland print sits beautifully against a calm blue wall.

A few things we always think about when choosing curtain fabric:

• How it looks in both morning and evening light
• How the pattern reads when it’s pleated, not just flat on a sample
• How it works with everything else in the room, from the walls to the joinery

Getting those details right is what makes a scheme feel considered rather than decorated.

Want to know which fabrics we used? Comment FABRIC and we’ll send you the details.

A full day in London yesterday for Rachael and Jessica, at Decorex in Chelsea Harbour.

Decorex is where we get to see new collections up close, feel the fabrics, test the finishes and talk to the makers properly. Corston’s lighting was a real highlight, beautifully made and the kind of detail that changes how a room feels in the evening.

It was lovely to see so many Yorkshire names flying the flag too. The Odd Mattress Company and Moon were both looking brilliant, and there was a huge amount of hardware to work through, which is always where the small decisions make a big difference.

We then headed to Chelsea Harbour to see the new Emporium, with collections from Adam Ellis, Warwick and AGA all under one roof.

Days like this are a big part of the job. Knowing the products, the quality and the people behind them means we can make confident recommendations for every project, whether it’s a family home, a care setting or a new development.

Back in the studio today with plenty of samples and a lot of ideas.

A peek behind the scenes this week.

October is when the studio really fills up with planning. Floor plans, samples on every surface, and lots of conversations about what people want their homes to feel like next year.

It’s our favourite kind of busy. This is the stage where the big decisions get made: how a space will flow, how it will feel in the evening light, which finishes will still look right in ten years’ time. Getting all of that settled calmly, well before a builder arrives, is what lets the work itself run smoothly.

If you’re thinking about a project for 2027, now is a lovely time to start the conversation. Pop into the studio on Cold Bath Road. The kettle’s always on.

A care home that feels like home from the moment you walk in.

Our Redhill case study is now live, and it’s one we’re really proud of.

This new build care home was designed to feel like a home first and a care setting second. Warm colours greet you at the door. There’s a café for catching up with family, cosy lounges that each have their own kitchen, and bathrooms with a calm, spa-like feel.

Plenty of the choices are quietly practical too. Walls, floors and furniture are carefully contrasted so they’re easier to see for residents with reduced vision. And the reception desk sits at wheelchair height, so everyone is welcomed at eye level.

Featured by Mandarin Stone: a family home in the heart of Harrogate.

We were brought in to manage a full-scale renovation here. Our clients wanted a home that felt connected, functional and timeless, somewhere their family could grow into and love for years to come.

In the bathrooms, that meant choosing materials that look beautiful and cope with everyday family life. Fragmenta Ivory terrazzo effect porcelain runs across the floors and walls, giving all the character of terrazzo without the upkeep. We paired it with Calacatta Amber honed marble in a herringbone mosaic in one room, and Loki Sage gloss ceramic in the other, for a soft touch of colour.

This is one of a number of our projects in the gallery. We specify Mandarin Stone a lot, and having their showroom here in Harrogate means our clients can see and feel the real thing before they decide.

Our Willow Lodge care home case study is now live.

Willow Lodge is a new build care home in Surrey, and the brief was one close to our hearts: a place that feels like a home first and a care setting second.

Swipe through for your first few steps inside.

The entrance carries the home’s colours straight through, so it feels warm from the moment you arrive. Reception is deliberately deeper in tone with its own lighting, so it’s clear where to go. And the desk sits at wheelchair height, so everyone is greeted at eye level.

Just across the way is the café. Somewhere to have a coffee with visiting family, catch up with friends, or simply sit and watch the world go by.

You’ve made an AI image of your dream kitchen. Now what?

More and more clients are arriving at their first meeting with AI generated rooms on their phones, and we love it. It’s a brilliant way to show us what you’re drawn to, in the same way a Pinterest board is. We use AI ourselves when we’re exploring early ideas.

What it gives you is a picture, though, not a plan. It hasn’t measured your room or seen where your light falls in the afternoon. It doesn’t know the radiator is on that wall, that the dog sleeps by the back door, or that the whole family ends up in the kitchen at 6pm.

That’s where we come in. We ask the questions about how you really live in your home, then work out what will fit, what will last and what’s realistic for your budget. And we know the joiners, electricians and decorators we’d trust to build it properly.

So please keep bringing the AI images. They’re a lovely place to start the conversation, and we’ll help you get from there to a room that works in real life.

Planning a renovation or extension? The earlier we’re involved, the better. Pop into the studio or use the link in our bio to get in touch.

October is when next year starts to take shape.

The evenings draw in, you’re at home more, and the conversation turns to next year. The extension you’ve talked about for ages. The kitchen that’s never quite worked. The house you bought knowing it would need a proper plan.

Here’s the bit most people don’t realise. Good builders and architects are already booking into spring. If you’d like work to start in 2027, the planning needs to start now.

It’s also the best moment to bring a designer in. Getting the layout, the lighting and the big decisions thought through before the builder starts means everything after is simpler, and far less likely to need changing later.

We’ve written about why autumn is the perfect time to start planning, and what to think about first. It’s linked in our bio.

What are you hoping to do to your home next year? Tell us in the comments. We’d love to hear.
