POV: you planted “a few” pumpkins in spring and now the whole plot is orange 🎃
From giant carvin
g pumpkins to little white ones, it’s been a good harvest. Which one would you carve first?

Planning next year’s patch? Pumpkin seeds go in from April, so there’s plenty of time to plan your spooky season.

Your garden doesn't have to be colourless this winter.

Photinia 'Red Robin' gets its colour from new growth, and trimming it brings out more new growth. So the more you prune it, the redder it gets.

Nandina 'Fire Power' does the opposite of most plants and gets brighter as the weather gets colder.

Cordyline 'Charlie Boy' stays pink and red all year.

Which one would go in your garden?

Turn the sound up.

Autumn is the time to tidy roses, not to prune them hard. Take off any dead or diseased stems, and cut long stems back by about a third so winter winds can't rock the roots loose. Save the main prune for late winter.

We think secateurs make the best sound in the garden, but we're open to other suggestions.

Your garden doesn't have to be colourless this winter.

Physocarpus 'Magic Ball' is a compact shrub with leaves that change colour through the year, finishing in copper and red before they fall.

Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea' has bright yellow-green stems that stand out once the leaves drop. Cut it back in spring for the best stem colour next winter.

Coronilla 'Glauca Citrina' keeps its blue-green leaves all year and has scented lemon-yellow flowers from late winter.

Which would you plant first?

Before you reach for the secateurs...

Red leaves at the top of your roses aren't a sign that something's wrong. That's new growth. The red pigment is thought to protect young leaves from the sun while they're still soft, a bit like sun cream. As the leaves toughen up, they turn green.

So leave them where they are.

Cold on its own isn't what damages plants. The real problem is ice crystals forming inside the plant tissue and splitting the cells. A little insulation goes a long way.

Mulch works like a duvet for roots. Pots are more at risk than borders because the roots only have a thin wall between them and the cold air, so move them somewhere sheltered. And yes, wrap counts as gardening equipment.

Save this for the first frosty night.
