The Red Beast was awoken from its summer slumber to help a friend in Need and it woke up hungry!

To quote the proverb "A Friend In Need Is A Friend Indeed"

One of our subbies got themselves in a bit of pinch when they were let down by a hire company who hadn't carried out the proper maintenance to their chipper.

We were more than happy to provide some support and cover with our machine and a few hours of graft to help them finish off their job.

We have been in that exact situation a few times in the past & we know how stressful it is, having a decent support network is absolutely paramount be it friends, sub contractors or suppliers.

Once we collected the machine from site it was time to treat Aka-Oni 👹 a power wash & clean down. While we had the kit out we washed Bob the Bobcat aswell so he didn't feel left out 🤣

Something new for Samurai Tree Care, at the start of the 2026 we became a NatureScot approved contractor after securing a tender for work in the Little Ferry nature reserve in Golspie.

The Non native tree removal work that was featured in a post earlier this year was 1 of 2 tenders we secured.

The second one was Spraying Gorse & Broom off inside the nature reserve along the links beach.

Now just for context the spraying works carried out was a follow on from a previous works that involved mechanical removal that took part years before and we were the insurance to guarantee the mechanical removal was a success.

Small targeted locations received spot spraying to target Gorse regeneration, this Wasn't mindless spraying inside a SSSI nature reserve 😂.

So myself and the team had a lovely day of driving the links, following the specification & delivering the project for NatureScot.

Another summer tree removal, what started as a quote for a tidy up elsewhere in the property and a branch removal.

Soon turned into a complete tree removal when observed the lean on this poplar tree in combination signs of root plate lift😱

Luckily we were on hand to recommend the best course of action, provide evidence to our case and guide the client into the best course of action.

Of course prior to starting this job a Wildlife assessment & observation was carried out, fortunately poplar has such an open crown it was easy to determine No Wildlife Presence

Not only did we carry out the removal but we also processed all of the arisings with the Red Beast & split all of the logs for the client.

A complete one stop shop ✅

We had our first call out of the season!

Before anyone tries to remember when the last storm was this summer, this huge piece of devastation wasn't caused by any storm.

This is a scary natural phenomenon known as "Summer Branch Drop" or SBD for short.

It's basically a sudden and completely unexpected failure of branches within a mature tree,

It happens without warning & on a calm day, the cause seems to be related to prolonged dry spells or intense down pours.

And it happens to quite a long list of broad leaf trees:
Oak, Beech, Horse Chestnut, Elm, Plane, Sweet Chestnut.

Unfortunately this time it was our clients beautiful veteran Beech tree.

We responded the same day to carry out an inspection of the damage & assembled an emergency response team to attend 3 days later on Saturday.

Fortunately we were successfully able to free off the snapped limb without causing further extensive damage to the crown, bark or stem.

All of the arisings were processed by the Red beast; Aka-Oni!

Another job done executed professionally & safely ✅

Spanning back to May I can finally reveal the details from one of our biggest projects to date. At the end of 2025 we were contacted by the company Envevo to help deliver a project in the north for the Royal Marine Hotel in Brora.

Part of the North Coast Hotel chain the client Tesla was to be installing their new superchargers for EVs at the hotel with Envevo as the primary contractor.

What started as a simple tree and planting quote, soon snowballed into one of the biggest project management rolls Samurai Tree Care has ever taken on to date.

With months of preparation and site meetings with Evevo, Tesla & The Royal Marine Hotel we finally got the go ahead to begin in late January 2026,
And the begining was just the tip of a very big project.

Over the first month we had to recruit multiple surveyors, A Bat surveyor, an Ecologist & a tree surveyor to conduct the 3 important surveys,

Followed by the installation of 3 Bat boxes prior to our work beginning.

After a month of surveys we finally began remedial works and a tree removal in April, once completed a stump grinder was used to removal all of the stumps.

Between April and May we carried out the installation of a large planting scheme all under the guidance of a large specification provided by planning and compensatory planting surveys.

To finish everything off we installed 3 bird boxes all part of the requirements.

The whole project finally came to a close in May and was a huge success although very challenging at times and a great experience.

A huge thank you to everyone involved and the help from the various surveyors & agents which helped deliver this project.

Back over to The Challenger Estate and something different this time.

We were given approval to begin a woodland management project at Challenger Lodge that will focus on improving the woodland both for the environmental benefit and welfare of the woodland as well as aesthetically and it will hopefully encourage exploration and usage by the guests of Challenger Estate.

First we started with this single line of riparian trees that border a small flowing burn, there are plans moving forward to improve this water course but first access must be improved.

So after the Canycom had removed the vegetation, the team proceeded to carry out selective thinning operations and removal of scrub all the way along this water course.

We aim to leave the better quality healthier trees but also those that were aesthetically pleasing.

All the brash was then wood chipped onto the ground for natural decomposition to take place and help improve the soil.

Some wood was harvested too which will help fill the wood stores at the lodge so they can be more self sufficient with their firewood.

The results were great and now we can move onto the second phase of actually entering the woodland to begin the broader management plan.

Another grass cutting week and still with the Bobcat held up in warranty work.

We took another opportunity to trial-demo new equipment!

This time we went for one of the best commercial mowers on the market, by the extremely well known brand Toro.

You don't have to be a lawncare professional to know about Toro who are widely known globally as one of the best in the world for lawncare equipment from your small domestic push mower right to £50,000 cutting edge professional kit.

This interesting looking machine is a Toro Grandstand Mower a fully commercial purpose built stand-on mower.... Yes you read that right you operate this mower riding it standing up!

We only had this machine on hire for a single day as amazingly we soared through our lawncare clients and ran out of grass to cut 😂
Probably thanks to the capabilities of this mower.

The two pictures show 2 different lawns at the same property;

The first one was the first cut of the year in wet grass with the machine on rear discharge, unfortunately I cut it a bit low and ended leaving a trail of debris, fortunately the second cut will improve that significantly 🤦

The second one hadn't grown as much and even with the machine on rear discharge it left a really good quality of cut.

Very impressed with this mower.

Back locally in Lairg! A tender that we priced in early winter 2025, which we weren't even sure if it was set to proceed.

But out of nowhere we were given the green light to proceed 🚦

Over at the BT Exchange Building Roofing Advisors were set to carry out a re-roofing job. Prior to starting this they needed an Arborist company to carry out clearance work around the building.

An ecologist was brought in by BT to carry out the necessary Surveys required & then we were clear to proceed.

The team was tasked with removing the Sitka Speuce limbs that over hung the building or made contact with the roof.

We started with ground base cutting removing low hanging limbs and clearing a safe path for navigating followed by some pole saw work to cut the higher limbs in reach from the ground.

Finally 2 climbers used the scaffolding & while tied in carried out further limb removal works to open up clearance zones.

From lawncare and back to tree surgery for the last few jobs of this season.

Now as our clients know we travel far and wide for our work!
If you accept our quotations then you can rely on Samurai Tree Care Limited to deliver, with the professionalism and communication that any individual would want when working with trades.

Leading onto this job in Kinlochbervie, the client was living in Edinburgh and after meeting for a quotation at the property the whole job moving forward was to be run remotely.

We pride ourselves in delivering clients needs even when they aren't present or potentially won't be for an extended amounts of time.

With the use of technology nowadays we are able to record progress and communicate with our clients in real-time to ensure their requirements are met.

This job in particular required some aerial work to be performed removing sections of the tree nearest the dwelling that risked potential damage or a voided insurance policy, crown raising the trees along the driveway for access by HGVs or Tankers
& finally removing branches that were interfering with the overhead telephone cables.

Once again we will state: Please check with your home insurance with regards to trees! Every insurer has a different take or requirement on the presence of trees close to a dwelling & some will be immediately voided if their requirements are not met.
