This small proportion 6 Aires Musical box retailed by John Alfred mills between the 1870 & 1880.
The musical box has a swiss movement and is very typical of the 1870s, this type of musical box where very fashionable during the late 19th century the musical box is in good working order needing a service and some sympathetic TLC.

These are two clocks completed this month, they have been running now for a couple of weeks so im happy for them to go home.
one of them is a very imposing Longcase or Grandfather clock dated 1776 made by William Lawson of Newton Le Willows, William lawson was a renowned clockmaker praised for his fine Longcase clocks, the other clock is a small mantal clock with a very nice french movement made by Japy Freres c1880.
This kind of movement is common and you will often find them in Victorian slate clocks made late 19th century, they are very well made and have an honest quality to them.

Edward Dent was a renowned 19th century watchmaker and he was famous for creating the famous great clock of Westminster which we all know as big ben, his pocket watches are sought after and in the picture we have two, the other was made by his step son Fredrick Dent who is best know for completing and installing the Great Clock of Westminster, these watches are part of my own collection.

Clock Repairs Merseyside We Repaired 3 very nice carrage clocks this month, they were of particular decent quality, one was a Charles Frodsham repeating striking clock with a double fusee movement but i will do a separate post on this next week.
No case refinishing was needed so service and restoration to the movements set up regulation and have been on test for a week or so, now ready to go home.

For so many years now i have been asked do you do pocket watch repairs, i have always declined although pocket watches where actually where my passion for everything Horilogical began , and now as im getting older i prefere to stay in my workshops so i have decided to dust of my old watchmaking tools and take a few jobs on, pocket watches like most Antique clocks are sometimes impossible to get parts for but, fortunately over the years i have ammased a lot of movements & parts but im sure i wont have all that i need.
So i will be considering a few pocket watch restorations, there will be a small inspection fee involved as free estimates on pocket watches could lead to misdiagnosis if not done thoroughly. all estimates i give will include a full service of the movement i wont be getting involved in small part repairs.
So apart from that inspection fee my pocket watch restoration buisiness will run along side my clock and musical box restorations, the pocket watches pictured are a few of my own as i have always collected pocket watches, the oldest watch movement is the single movement on its own made by William Talton of Liverpool 1730, he worked from a shop on church street in the Liverpool city centre, its not the prettiest watch have but the thought that it was made completly by hand over 250 years ago can set your mind wondering into days long gone.

I have decided with the music box restoration of my own to go a different way, as the box is realey beat up, stain and shellac are not going to give me the look i want.
So my thoughts are as its in affect a musical instrument i thought a nice piano black, but then i thought there is a bump on the box lid and a gloss black will highlight any imperfection so lets go with a nice high build matt black, then ill finish it of with a very very light wax not enough of a shine to highlight imperfection and i can control the shine much better with a wax, this will go very well with the movement with its chrome fittings, and some nice simple brass inlay nothing fancy, the box has now had 3 coats of primer and will be flattened of then 4 coats of black flattened of 3 times the last with a very fine wet and dry then a canuba wax, this is a generated image, its missing a key plate i will make out of a piece of brass stock, this will be a truly one off, i would have liked to go with a beautiful dark mahogany with several coats of shellac but the old box would let the whole thing down.

I have made a start on the Antique 10 Aires musical box, this box is pretty much a basket case and looks to have had a hard life, I have no idea of it’s maker at the moment but maybe this will become more obvious when I start the work on the movement.
Because the movement looks like it’s not in its original box and the box is not the usual high quality box im not going to worry about preservation of its originality and a sympathetic restoration won’t improve the musical box in any way so complete restoration is the only way to go and as the box is one of my own I can pretty much do what works.
