Parametric families can increase Revit's computational workload because constraints and relationships may need to be recalculated when geometry changes.
The performance impact depends on the complexity of those relationships, the family geometry, and how the family is used in the project.
Best practices for efficient parametric families:
1. Parameterise only necessary dimensions. Avoid creating controls for fixed features that do not need to change.
2. Keep geometry appropriate to its purpose. Do not model internal details that are unnecessary for coordination or documentation.
3. Control visibility at different detail levels. Coarse, Medium, and Fine representations can reduce unnecessary graphic complexity.
4. Avoid unnecessary imported CAD geometry. Where practical, use simplified native Revit elements rather than embedding complex imported models.
5. Test the family with multiple configurations. Confirm that expected parameter changes do not produce errors, distortions, or unexpected geometry.
Performance testing should also reflect real project conditions. A family that behaves well in an empty test model may need further optimisation when used extensively in a complex project.
