The Bedroom Sanctuary Palette 💭

Come autumn, our homes become places to retreat, recharge and hibernate (preferably with a blanket, a book and absolutely no plans).

And the bedroom should be our own little sanctuary. Sometimes reluctantly shared with another, of course. I’ve always thought of the bed as a nest: somewhere to burrow into and pretend the outside world doesn’t exist for a solid eight hours. Eight and a half, if we’re being ambitious.

The goal is softness and ease, not perfection. In feng shui, the bedroom is all about flow. Keep surfaces simple, let the room breathe, choose natural materials that feel grounding and use lighting that flatters rather than floods.

As the evenings draw in, I love leaning into softer, earthier colours inspired by nature.

For the Project Sandbanks primary, that means neutral limewash walls, warm oak timber and antique brass, layered with sheepskin, woven textures, a rattan pendant and earthy linen cushions. Limewash brings a beautiful, organic movement to the walls, while the mix of natural materials adds depth and character without making the room feel too done.

Because a bedroom sanctuary should ultimately feel like the loveliest place in the world to do absolutely nothing.

Save this palette for your next bedroom refresh. Your nest awaits 🌙

And here it is *insert drum roll*… the Project Ham House kitchen.

I’m so pleased to finally share the stills of the hardest-working room in this extraordinary home.

The challenge here was making such a vast space with soaring ceilings feel like a country house kitchen in the truest sense: somewhere warm, welcoming and full of life, rather than a cavernous space you admire from the doorway. Getting it right was a real team effort between our clients, the architects, our team and the brilliant joiners.

And the details. Oh, the details.

Beautiful Arabescato marble, a rather glorious three-metre-plus island in contrasting dark timber, and those little flashes of jewellery in the form of Waterworks taps and Armac Martin hardware throughout.

Then there’s what’s happening above our heads. The enormous rooflight floods the room with natural light, while the coffered ceiling, beams and coving give the fifth wall the attention it deserves.

A country house kitchen with grandeur, yes, but more importantly, one made for cooking, gathering, lingering over dinner and all the beautiful mess of family life.

There is simply too much to love about this room to squeeze it all into one caption, so if you fancy seeing more, the full Ham House YouTube series is waiting for you. Three episodes taking you from the very first stages of this enormous renovation right through to the grand finale: the finished house tour.

The same room, two realities.

The first is a portfolio shot of my cottage. A moment we captured, a vision made real, a thing of beauty that genuinely exists in that space. It isn’t a lie. But it’s also not 8am on a school day, when I’m rushing for the door, navigating a fort that spans the entire width of the room. Markedly less floor on show.

So here is a healthy dose of reality, and a conversation I think we need to have about the pressure we put on ourselves as women to maintain perfection, at all times, at all costs.

You are allowed to love a beautifully designed space and still leave your coat on the floor. You are allowed to want gorgeous things and let your children draw on the table. You are allowed to aspire and to live. These things are not in conflict. I promise you they are not.

Mess shouldn’t be a source of shame. It’s simply a home with a pulse. It is not a character flaw. It is not a sign that you’re failing. It’s a sign that you are present in your life. That people eat here. That children sleep here. That you are busy and human and doing your absolute best.

I have never once walked into a home and judged its owners by the laundry on the chair. I have walked into homes and felt them: the warmth, the personality, the possibility.

So if you’re reading this at the end of a long week of keeping your own head (and your family’s) above water, consider this your permission slip. No home was ever meant to be a showroom. Please don’t apologise for living in yours. That’s what it’s for.

And if you’d like a little more of this thinking, my book No Place Like Home is a gentle guide to creating homes that genuinely work for how we live. I’ll also be at Cheltenham Festivals on Tuesday 13th October, in conversation with Georgina Blaskey, Interiors Editor at SheerLuxe, talking through the design principles behind homes that don’t just look beautiful but enrich the way we live every day. I’d love to see you there 🤍

Join me on a site visit to Project Islington - five storeys of Grade II listed London townhouse with very good bones.

And by good bones, I mean soaring proportions and enough Victorian coving and cornice mouldings to keep an interior designer happy for quite some time. Layers of history everywhere you look. The sort of details that were made properly, before everything became suspiciously flat and square, and which deserve a little love rather than a skip to the nearest skip.

We’re carefully restoring those original details, while rethinking the layout so this five-storey home works beautifully for modern life. This is the bit I love: giving an old house a new chapter without erasing the chapters that came before.

More to come from Project Islington. Ask me your Victorian townhouse renovation questions below and I’ll be back with a full video.

The Power of Panelling - Part 3 is here, and this one’s the finale.

This week I’m breaking down V-groove vs bead & butt, half height vs floor to ceiling, the fifth wall, board width & direction, and why we almost always specify MDF over real timber. I’m practically bursting at the panel joins with this one - save it before your next project.

Honestly I could harp on about panelling forever more, but I’ll stop there - for now.

Now, what should my next series be? Drop your suggestions below.

A little Monday morning before-and-after magic, courtesy of the Ham House eaves.

There’s something rather magical about a child’s bedroom tucked up in the roofline. All those funny little nooks, sloping ceilings and awkward corners become opportunities to create secret spaces for hiding, reading, dreaming and generally letting the imagination run riot.

For this little girl’s bedroom, we fully embraced the whimsy with this oyster-shell wallpaper, then layered in raspberry, red and burgundy tones to give the room a little more depth. The result feels like stepping inside a doll’s house - one I’d very much like to move into myself.

Swipe to see the transformation →

And if you haven’t watched the Ham House YouTube series yet, take this as your cue. Three episodes documenting this enormous renovation, from the very first stages right through to the final house tour.

Things I’m loving (and always will): Wallpaper Edition.

Wallpaper seems to be having a real moment again. In my opinion, it should never have left.

No paint colour, however beautifully mixed, can do what pattern does to a room. Wallpaper adds interest, depth, texture and a sense of intention that a flat wall simply can’t. But, as with most good things in life, I believe in a little restraint. You wouldn’t eat the entire snack drawer in one sitting (well, sometimes we do), and nor should you reach for the wallpaper every time you see a bare wall. It’s a special treat for the eyes.

The rooms I reach for it most are guest bedrooms for that little boutique-hotel surprise nurseries for a bit of whimsy, and downstairs loos because the smallest room in the house is the perfect place to throw caution out the window.

Swipe through for some of my favourite wallpaper moments from projects past. And if choosing wallpaper feels like a complete minefield, have a read of my House Nine Wallpaper Edit on Substack (link in bio). I’ve lifted the veil on the suppliers we actually use at House Nine, so you can skip the endless scrolling and go straight to the good stuff.

It’s here! The full reveal of Ham House. The project is finished, the clients have moved in and I’m taking you lucky lot on a whistle-stop tour of the finished home.

From the dramatic curved staircase and the light-filled void that opened up the entrance, to the clients his-and-hers studies, the formal living room with its double-aspect fireplace, and a country-house kitchen that’s anything but ordinary, this is where every design decision, detail and material finally comes together.

In this third and final episode, I walk you through room by room, sharing the thinking behind the big architectural moves and the teeny tiny details that make the house sing: drop-down skirting, recessed panelling, “fifth wall” ceilings, a channelled archway into the primary suite, and the eaves children’s bedrooms, which are pure magic.

This is the final chapter of the Ham House series, so a huge thank you for coming along from first vision to finished home.

Go and watch the full episode on the House Nine YouTube channel and then come straight back here and let me know your favourite room!
