Before there was 121 Collective, there were workshop days, wood shavings, shared drawings and a lot of figuring things out together.
As architecture students at Kingston School of Art , live-build projects took us from drawings to structures we could touch, walk beneath and spend time in.
That’s where our name comes from: 1:1.
Cutting joints, testing materials and assembling spaces taught us to design through making. Essential to that experience was the hands-on approach of Takeshi Hayatsu 早津毅 , who taught alongside Simon Jones Jones Neville and Jim Reed Reed Watts Architects
What brought us together was the pleasure of making, learning from one another, and sharing skills with friends, tutors, technicians and collaborators.
We wanted to keep working that way. 121 grew from there.
A big shout-out to all our homies from Studio 3.2 (2015) and Unit 5 (2016–2018), who shared those workshop days and builds with us.
