📊 The cheapest quote isn't always the cheapest option.
We reviewed 4 tenders for the same project and received the below:
Supplier Total Tender Value
A £99,208
B £107,654
C £96,578
D £89,279 ✅
Most people would look at this and immediately choose Supplier D. After all, it's nearly £7,300 cheaper than the next lowest quote. But when we reviewed the itemised breakdown, we spotted something interesting.
Supplier Painting & Decorating Costs
A £16,385
B £17,556
C £16,272 ✅
D £33,772 ❌
The cheapest overall contractor was actually charging £17,500 more (over £21,000 including VAT) for painting & decorating than another tenderer.
💡 The lesson?
Don't assume that awarding every element of a project to one contractor will automatically maximise economies of scale. Sometimes the overall price is competitive, but individual work packages can be significantly above market rates.
That's why we recommend:
✅ Getting at least 4 quotes
✅ Asking for itemised breakdowns
✅ Challenging unusually high prices
✅ Looking beyond the bottom-line figure
The cheapest overall quote may be the right choice. But you'll never know unless you can see what's going on beneath the surface.
Would you have spotted that £21,000 difference without an itemised quote?
