Potect is an Innovative new solution for the pots you love

A new solution for raising pots off the ground is launching on Amazon called Potect. Creator Giovanni Nieddu is a keen gardener and had so many clay pots that suffered in the winter with frost and then didn’t drain very well. With this in mind he used his extensive experience in toolmaking and put his skills to developing a solution. Giovanni Nieddu’s career began in Italy with a comprehensive four year training in toolmaking that covered everything from tool design through to the physics behind the processes. After graduating he worked first in gun making, then relocated to the UK where his role included manufacturing the first-ever moulded fountain pen, numerous mould tools and developing the cutting-edge ‘red dot’ sight for the armed forces. He now runs a family business called Micro Plas Mouldings and discovered that he was as passionate about building strong working relationships with clients as he was about the technical challenges of toolmaking. Last year during the lockdowns, Giovanni got thinking more about the loss of his pots and decided he had to spend time drawing a solution, and so Potect was born. Liza, his daughter who also works in the business said “Dad’s a great inventor and has had so many amazing ideas over the years like the shock lock now used by the AA to secure the suspension on cars when they are being transported. He loves his garden and creating a solution for fellow gardeners was something he felt he just had to do !”

Potect offers those people who have treasured pots the opportunity to lift them up with a supportive circle, without being seen like the feet that have been the main solution historically; allowing the plants to drain and protect from frost damage. Potect can also be used in the house to raise pots up to avoid staining on floors and window sills. Giovanni says, “As a family business we are passionate about customer service and every customer is important. I genuinely enjoy creating solutions for people through my extensive experience of toolmaking”

Feeling a little sad saying goodbye to your summer blooms?

Then here's how you can add a little colour to your garden this autumn:

1. Embrace autumn! Just because summer is behind us doesn't mean the end of bright, beautiful blooms. Many hardy flowers are well suited to the unpredictable UK autumn weather.

2. Incorporate foliage. Flowers aren't the only way to keep your garden colourful. Foliage can offer interesting textures and colours throughout the year.

3. Plan ahead. Autumn is a time of preparation for many gardeners and the perfect time to plant bulbs that will reward stunning blooms next spring.

What are some of your favourite ways to add a splash of colour to the garden?

Raised beds are the perfect way to elevate any garden, and October is the right time to get building your own!

So how can you build a raised bed in your garden?

Step One: Mark out the size of your raised bed by digging a small, shallow trench.

Step Two: Position the first layer of timber. Make sure they all align horizontally and check the height with a spirit level.

Step Three: At each corner, drill into the timber at the top and bottom, then screw together to secure.

Step Four: If you want to add multiple layers to your raised bed, repeat the process.

Step Five: Remove any grass that may still be at the bottom of the bed, then fill the bed to around 5cm below the rim. Leave the soil to firm up for a couple of weeks, topping up the level if necessary, then you're ready to get planting!

Autumn is such a wonderful time in the garden, and it's the perfect season to start preparing your plants for winter.

As any keen gardener may know, the secret to a fabulous spring garden next year starts with what you do now.

Autumn is a transitional period in any garden and a time to do some selective trimming and tidying up while you prep for the cold months ahead. Try cutting back any excess growth on shrubs and deadheading any summer flowers that are fading.

With milder temperatures and still plenty of daylight hours, autumn is a great time for any landscaping projects you may have been putting off. If you've been thinking of replacing the garden path or building a new raised bed, autumn is the time.

Everybody loves a good garden shortcut that promises to make your gardening life easier, more fun, and way more successful.

But let's be honest, most of these tricks don't actually work.

So, we've gathered a couple that really do to make your Autumn garden thrive!

Are your plants looking a little sad and droopy?

Banana peels are the perfect potassium boost you need to keep your flowering plants looking their best. Simply chop up a couple of peels and bury them under the plant's base. Then watch your plants come back to life as the peels decompose.

Are you suffering from stubborn weeds?

Weeds can be annoyingly persistent, but don't worry, there's no need for harsh chemicals. White vinegar offers a natural alternative to stop those pesky intruders. Spray just a little on the leaves of the unwanted plants on a sunny day, then sit back and relax.

Looking for a safe, natural way to save your plants from fungal growth?

Cinnamon is more than just a way to spice up your food. Full of antifungal properties, it's the ideal option for naturally protecting your young plants and seedlings. And all you have to do is dust a little cinnamon on your soil surface.

These are just a couple of our favourite ways to look after your plants; we'd love to hear some of yours! Let us know below. 💭

Houseplants are a simple and beautiful way to bring life and colour to your home, but keeping them happy and healthy can sometimes be a little challenging.

From understanding each plant's watering needs to ensuring they get the perfect amount of light, there's a lot to consider.

So here are a few little hacks to elevate your plant care system and keep them thriving.

💧 1. Check the soil moisture before you water. Overwatering is a common mistake and one that will really distress your plants. Touch the top of your soil; if it feels dry, then it's time to water; if not, hold off.

🪴 2. Rotate your plants regularly. Plants naturally grow towards the light, which, if you don't rotate them, can cause uneven growth. So give them a little turn each week to make sure all sides receive equal light.

🌿 3. Keep your plants' leaves clean. Dusty leaves can hinder a plant's incredible ability to photosynthesise. Gently wipe them over every so often with a damp cloth to keep them clean and healthy.

When was the last time you tried an innovative yet practical DIY hack to transform your garden?

Whether you're a seasoned gardener or have a new green thumb, these tips and tricks are a great way to maximise your garden's potential with everyday items!

1. Egg carton seed starters: When you're done with your eggs, don't throw away the carton. Instead, fill each half with soil and a seed and pop them in a sunny spot to see your seedlings grow.

2. Create your own watering globe. Using any empty glass or plastic bottles, fill them up, invert them, and pop them in the soil near your plant stems for a simple self-watering system.

3. Make your own plant fertiliser. Did you know that used coffee grounds can be a fantastic fertiliser? Rich in nitrogen, they enhance soil quality and encourage healthy plant growth.

What are some of your favourite DIY gardening hacks? We'd love to hear your favourite everyday tips and tricks.
