I was doing a bit of hedge pruning up a ladder at Treehug Nurseries the other day and this was the autumnal view of my tree stock below. The trees have grown well this year!
Still lots for sale and the following are looking especially good: Quercus rubra - red oaks are colouring up nicely and I have quite a few 6ft+ specimens. Sorbus aucuparia - the Rowans this year are looking very autumnal and I have lots in 20l pots (£40) at 6ft+. Pinus sylvestris - and when everything else is shutting down for winter, the Scots pines offer some evergreen beauty. I have lots in 10l pots (£25) and hado pots (£20) all at around 4-5ft.

An interesting order picked up last week to be planted on a local estate: Paulownia (Foxglove Tree), Zelkova serrata (Japanese Zelkova), Liquidambar (Sweetgum), Pinus thunbergii (Japanese Black Pine) and Corylus collurna (Turkish Hazel). The Zelkovas and Paulownia were grown from seed, the Japanese pine from seedlings and the rest from bare-root. I love growing these interesting trees and it’s satisfying to see them going to a good home 🫡 So long Zelkovas.

Dawn Redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) from seed sown a couple of years ago: I love growing these! They grow satisfyingly fast and have an elegance that belies their vigour. We keep them in the semi-shade to avoid them drying out.
£20 each.

Scots Pines (Pinus sylvestris) at Treehug Nurseries.
These have done really well this year: all mine are from 2yr old bareroot plants potted up last year. They’re now around 5 foot and looking healthy!
£20 each.

This years Giants, Coastals, Mugo pines and Black pines all enjoying the weather and protection from blackbirds and/mice at little treehug nurseries. When I get my land, I’m hoping to have a bed 10 times the length of this filled with little seed-raised trees…😎

Potted on my 2024 sown Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Redwoods) into 18l pots today at Treehug Nurseries. The roots looked great and the rootball held together just the right amount to be potted on. These will be for sale next year once the roots have filled the pot at £40 each. I have 80 more seedlings doing really well so I may well change my nursery name to Giant Treehug Nurseries soon 😆
It’s satisfying growing Redwoods from seed because wherever you are in England, if you look to the horizon you’ll probably see a Giant Redwood towering over the landscape like nature’s sentinels 🫡
