One of the biggest mistakes I see new interior designers make is thinking they need a huge portfolio, years of experience or a big project before they can start working with clients.

After 23 years in the industry and mentoring over 500 designers, I can tell you that’s simply not true.

Consultations are one of the most practical ways to start your interior design business. You can offer a professional service, gain real client experience, build your portfolio and create opportunities for larger projects.

But there’s a difference between giving someone design advice and delivering a professional, profitable consultation. You need to know what you’re offering, how to price it, where the boundaries are and how to manage the client from start to finish.

That’s what we’re covering today at 12pm London time inside IntoDesign.

You don’t need a university degree to become an interior designer. But you DO need proper training, practical skills and experience.

I spent seven years at university earning two degrees, I’m a registered architect with 23 years of industry experience, and I’ve mentored over 500 interior designers in the past 10 years.

I know the value of university education, but I also know it’s not the only way to learn interior design!

Learning directly from experienced professionals, developing practical skills and gaining experience through real projects is another valuable route into interior design (and how designers have been legitimately starting careers in design since the beginning.

Its especially an important pathway for career changers who can’t spend another three or four years at university.

That’s why I created IntoDesign.

To teach aspiring interior designers how to design, work with real clients, prepare drawings, manage projects, price their services and build a profitable interior design business.

If you’re starting an interior design business, don’t wait until you feel like a ‘real’ interior designer before you start getting involved in the industry!

Trade shows are one of the best places to learn about products, meet suppliers, make industry connections and build your confidence.

And don’t be embarrassed about being new! You don’t need a portfolio, paying clients or years of experience to start building relationships in the industry.

There’s so much advice out there about how to get interior design clients, charge higher fees and make £30K months.

And yes, I teach all of that too!

But getting clients is only one part of building a successful interior design business.

You also need to know how to develop concepts, create technical drawings, manage clients, run projects profitably, feel confident with regulations and actually deliver what you’ve promised.

Meanwhile, someone with less experience is out there getting clients, building their business and learning as they go.

You don’t build an interior design business by waiting until you’re ready. You build it by starting.

Start small. Get paid. Gain experience. Grow from there.
