Join AHCraftsman at Jervaulx Abbey for our hands-on lime workshops, welcoming homeowners and anyone interested in caring for traditional buildings.

We’ll explore:

• Different types of lime and their uses.
• Why suitable materials matter for traditional solid-wall construction.
• When to seek specialist advice and what to look for when choosing a contractor.
• Common causes of masonry deterioration and how unsuitable materials can accelerate damage.
• How to visually assess original mortar and match it as closely as possible.
• Preparing masonry for repointing and safely mixing quicklime mortar.

Each participant will prepare their own lime mortar, prepare a section of masonry and practise repointing under guidance.

A practical introduction to understanding your building and making informed decisions about its care.

A nice, straightforward lime repointing project completed.
Our initial assessment identified signs of brick deterioration, white salt deposits known as efflorescence, and damp pe*******on affecting the internal walls in several areas.
We carefully removed the old cement-based pointing and replaced it with lime mortar, better suited to the existing brickwork and allowing moisture to escape more readily through the joints.
A fresh finish that keeps the character of the building.

We're making good progress on this charming G2 property and look forward to returning next year to complete the work. In the meantime, we're allowing the lime to set on both the inside and outside, monitoring the results over the winter. Hopefully, the lime will help manage the moisture better and gradually dry out the property, making it even more beautiful and comfortable.

We installed a Glasscrete Limecrete Floor System, incorporating GEOCELL Foam Glass Aggregate as an insulating and moisture-managing sub-base, followed by a breathable limecrete slab.
This type of floor system is particularly well suited to traditional and historic buildings, helping to manage ground moisture naturally while improving the thermal performance of the floor.
Unlike modern impermeable concrete floor systems, limecrete allows moisture to move naturally through the floor, helping the building to breathe and reducing the risk of moisture being pushed towards the surrounding walls.
The limecrete slab is now ready for floating and final preparation before the installation of natural stone flags.
A sustainable solution using traditional materials that works with the building rather than against it.

Another heritage restoration project completed. This project involved the restoration of a traditional solid wall property, with all works carried out using traditional hot lime mortar. The scope of works included rebuilding sections of the gable wall, rebuilding damaged masonry around the openings, installing new natural stone lintels, rebuilding the entire chimney stack, installing new fascia boards and soffits, fitting new guttering, and carrying out internal lime plastering. A great project to be involved in!

Project Number 2 is officially finished! ✅
I’ve been busy working on this beautiful Grade II listed house in North Yorkshire, and I’m so proud of how it turned out. We didn't take any shortcuts on this one—the owner wanted everything done properly to keep the house in great shape for years to come.
First, we did a full repoint of the front and the side of the house. We actually sent a piece of the old mortar to a lab to be tested, so we could match it as closely as possible to the original, using a special quicklime mix. While we were at it, we pulled out a massive pile of old rusty nails and hooks that had been stuck in the stone for years—you can see in the pictures just how much there was!
We also had to rebuild small parts of the wall and fit 8 metal stitches to stop some old cracks from moving. One of the most satisfying parts was fixing the stone around the windows. A previous owner had tried to fix them with cement, which isn't good for the stone, so we stripped that back and did a proper stone repair.
To top it all off, the house is now protected from damp with a new French drain outside and a lovely three-layer lime plaster finish on the inside. It was a big job, but what a fantastic result!
A huge thank you to the owner for trusting me with your home.
