Can we automate existing gates?

In most cases, yes! Automation can often be added to existing gates without the need to replace them.

The most important factors are the gate geometry and structural suitability. That's why we always begin with a free site survey to assess what's possible and recommend the most appropriate solution, whether that's underground motors or rams fitted directly to the gates.

The gates pictured are a great example of this. We were able to refurbish and automate the customer's existing gates, giving them the convenience of electric gates without replacing them.

Not sure whether to choose a sliding gate or a pair of swing gates?

The best option will often be determined by the amount of space you have available and how much of that space you'd like to retain for parking.

A sliding gate moves from side to side in a straight line; vehicles can park quite close to it. This can make it a great solution if you're limited on the depth of space available for parking. It can also work well where an entrance slopes up or down, as the gate travels across the entrance rather than swinging over the driveway.

With a pair of swing gates, you'll need enough space for each gate to move in an arc from its closed to open position. The gradient of your driveway also needs to be considered, as this can affect how freely the gates can open.

There are options available to give swing gates greater manoeuvrability too, including underground automation that can allow them to open almost all the way back on themselves.

So, sliding or swing gates? There's no single answer that works for every property. The space available, parking requirements, gradient and access all need to be considered when deciding which option will work best for you.

Outside of our regular servicing of your gates, there are some other things you can do yourself to keep them weatherproof, clean and attractive.

It depends on what your gates are made from:

✅ Cleaning metal
Metal is quick to clean; all it takes is a bucket of soapy water – use a mild detergent – and a sponge, once or twice a year, and your gates will keep their good looks.

✅ Cleaning wood
Wood takes a little more care. Whether you opted for an oiled or stained finish, it’s wise to give this close attention on an annual basis, to keep the wood in good condition and avoid damage from the elements. That might mean a fresh coat of wood stain or oiling the wood.

✅ Cleaning mixed materials
If you have metal frame gates with wood infill, you’ll need to care for the wood as described above, although the metal will just need a wash with soapy water.

In the case of metal with composite infill, use soapy water and a sponge, or a pressure washer on a low setting.

You might have heard of a sliding gate, but what is a cantilever gate?

This one was installed at a local cricket club. It slides across the entrance, but unlike a traditional sliding gate, there's no rail running across the ground underneath it. Instead, the gate is supported from the side and effectively travels above the ground as it opens and closes.

That makes cantilever gates particularly useful where a ground rail could cause problems, such as uneven terrain or entrances regularly used by HGVs and other heavy vehicles. There's also no rail for mud, snow or ice to collect in.

They can be used across wider entrances too, provided there's enough space alongside for the gate to slide back when it's open.

Did you know rising bollards can be used alongside existing gates to help control vehicle access?

This one was installed in front of a pair of existing gates, providing an additional way to restrict unwanted vehicle access while still allowing vehicles through when needed.

Rising bollards have a relatively low visual impact and can be used for traffic and parking management as well as improving security.

Depending on the site, we can install manual or fully automated rising bollards, along with gates and barriers, to provide the right access solution for the space.
