Originally from East Asia, Japanese knotw**d was introduced to Europe in the 19th century and later brought to Britain because of its attractive appearance and vigorous growth. It was planted in gardens and parks before its ability to spread became much better understood.

Japanese knotw**d is extremely persistent. It can spread through underground rhizomes, allowing new growth to emerge beyond what is visible above ground.

What started as a desirable ornamental plant eventually became a much more complicated problem.

That means the visible stems don't necessarily show the full extent of the plant.

And this is one reason why simply cutting back what you can see doesn't necessarily solve the problem.
