Things that scare us as builders…

A few things that genuinely send shivers down our spines:

“We’ve made a few changes to the plans…”“It’s only a little bit of knocking through.”“We thought we’d just move that wall…”“The builder before you said it would be easy.”And the more unusual… “We found something behind the wall.”

Behind every great renovation is a few unexpected surprises.

Luckily, we’ve seen a fair few of them before!

Who says colour is just for the inside?

When you’re renovating or extending your home, it can be tempting to play it safe on the outside.

But introducing a little colour can completely transform the look and feel of your home.

From a bold exterior finish or painted cladding to colourful doors, windows or contrasting details, choosing something a little different can add character, personality and plenty of kerb appeal.

And you don’t have to go all out.

Sometimes, one considered splash of colour is enough to make your home stand out and give it a completely new identity.

Because your home should feel like you; inside and out.

So, would you be brave enough to add a little more colour to your next renovation?

The finishing touches make it yours.

A beautifully designed kitchen is a wonderful starting point but it’s the personal touches that bring it to life.

A favourite plant on the windowsill. Family photographs tucked onto a shelf.A colourful appliance that makes you smile.A piece of artwork you’ve had for years. That slightly quirky object that you could never part with.Or something treasured that has a story behind it.

These are the things that turn a beautiful kitchen into a lived-in kitchen; one that feels personal, familiar and completely yours.

We believe that the best kitchens aren’t the ones that look like they’ve come straight from a showroom, they’re the ones that tell you a little something about the people who live there.

Would your dream kitchen pass the ‘cup of tea’ test?

Forget the perfectly styled kitchen for a moment. The best kitchens aren’t just beautiful; they’re designed around real life.

A space where you can make a cup of tea while chatting to the family.Where the kids can do their homework while you’re cooking.Where everyone can sit down together. And where there’s actually somewhere to put the school bags, coats and shopping.

Because good design isn’t just about how a space looks.

It’s about how it works, how it feels and how easily it fits into everyday life.

So, would your dream kitchen pass the cup of tea test?

Never underestimate the power of natural light… especially when the days get shorter.

A well-designed space can completely change the way a home feels and bringing in as much natural light as possible is one of the most important parts of that.

Whether it’s a set of bi-fold doors opening up onto the garden, French doors bringing light into a snug space or a rooflight or skylight drawing sunshine in from above, the right glazing can make a room feel brighter, bigger and more connected to the outdoors.

And in the depths of winter, when daylight can feel like it disappears far too quickly, those extra rays of natural light can make all the difference.

Good design isn’t just about creating more space.

It’s about creating better space… light, bright and enjoyable to live in all year round.

Thinking about knocking down a wall?

Don’t pick up the sledgehammer just yet!

Removing a wall can completely transform the way your home feels but there’s a little more to it than simply deciding where you’d like the opening to be.

Before any walls come down, there are a few important things to consider:

* Is the wall structural?* Will you need steelwork?* Are building regulations involved?* How will the new space flow?* How can we make the most of the light and space?

Getting these things right at the beginning can save you time, money and a whole lot of stress further down the line!

At Open Plan Space, we can help take care of the process from the initial ideas and architectural drawings, through to the structural work and finished space.

So before you reach for that sledgehammer… let's make a plan.

A beautiful kitchen isn’t just about the big decisions.

Sometimes, it’s the details that bring everything together… like a classic Belfast sink, traditional cabinetry and those little touches that make a kitchen feel lived in and loved.

Timeless, practical and full of character, this is the kind of kitchen that feels just as at home on a busy Monday morning as it does hosting friends on a Saturday evening.

We feel that good design should look beautiful and work beautifully!
