When a customer buys what seems an eclectic mix of items for a house renovation, we’re sometimes scratching our heads as to what the plan is.

So it was with a very pleasant chap named Daniel, who then surprised us all when he sent in these photos 😍

Geometric design tiles as fireplace lining and mantel? Well, why not?! And why not back that up with the textured black floor tiles in another fireplace?

Mixed size tiles as a hearth? Sure.

And chequerboard quarry tiles as a faux step? Looks good.

We have a mantra of there are no rules, and this rather cool renovation is the new poster child! 🥰

A batch of rare SALT GLAZED 10 bar(!) stable pavers arrived today 😍

Salt glazing is an old technique that’s difficult to master but it creates a distinctive orange/brown/russet colouring depending on the clay used. Once the salt has vaporised, its constituent chemicals, sodium and chlorine, react with the surface of the paver creating a finish that’s resistant to water, frost, acids and even animal waste (that can be quite corrosive). Consequently it was used in commercial dairies, sculleries and brewery yards.

However, we’ve been unable to track down any current installations of this type of paver, so if anyone knows of one, let us know, it would be great to see them in situ 🥰

From English Civil War figures (slide 1. Sir Thomas Fairfax) and battles (slide 3. The Battle of Marston Moor) to Spanish kings (slide 4.) and the complete opposite in a depiction of the Allegory of Peace (slide 3. PAX)

Fire backs often have meaning in their sometimes innocuous images. We do have one of a maid in a dairy though, which is probably about milk 🐄
