A friend brought me this delightful evergreen perennial yesterday, Salvia microphylla ‘ hot lips’.

It’ll be a nice bushy plant, flowering through July and August and not only is it evergreen but being part of the mint family, it’s leaves are aromatic too.

So getting it planted is my job for today.

There are still plenty of jobs to do through August:

Pruning- wisteria should be pruned now to keep it flowing more freely and to let air in and if you’ve got trained fruit trees, get those pruned in line with their training so they keep fruiting well for you next year.

Dead heading- dead head all of your flowering plants to encourage those flowers to keep coming, especially your roses and summer bedding.

Collect seeds- Now is a great time to collect seeds once flowers are over from plants such as sweet peas, astranthia and Poppy’s. But leave some fit the birds.

Ooh yes..... and keep watering! Especially pots. Use green water where you can.

And lastly, one thing you should definitely do, is sit, sit and enjoy your garden space, however big or small.

This cottage style border was only planted up in October last year and it is absolutely blooming!

Not only is it bursting with colour but the mix of shrubs and herbaceous perennials are buzzing with all our beneficial insects too.

The bees and butterfly’s are loving the lilac Monada ( bee balm), the huge white fluffy landing pads of hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ and of course the lavender.

If you’d like a planting bed design, to attract wildlife through as much of the year as possible, get in touch with us.

So finally this front garden design is finished. Below are some before and after pictures. Who says front gardens can’t be beautiful as well as practical?

The planting border contains mixed herbaceous planting which has been chosen to make sure there’s a colourful show all year and evergreen shrubs will give a structure all year.

Wisteria clambering up a steel umbrella is a great focal point from inside the house as well as outside and eventually the cherry tree at the entrance will be a real welcome home.

If you’re thinking about a garden design or even just a planting plan, feel free to get in touch.

The tulips are now taking over as the daffs start to fade.

Tulip Apeldoorn is almost poppy like with its gorgeous red petals opening up wide in the sun. They look lovely mixed in amongst Tulip Candy Apple delight with its juicy red petals edged in white.

And Tulip ballerina is a lovely lily-flowered tulip with soft tangerine orange flowers, and a heady scent on a day like today as it gets warm in the sun.

Happy Easter from Peaceful Spaces.

Hello sun! And hello all our lovely wildlife such as this Peacock butterfly basking on one of my Hyacinths.

Thanks to my local plant nursery Growing Strong Ltd who delivered lots of compost and manure to me today, I can give my vegetable beds a good mulch and plant up this Rose.

It’s important to remember when you are planting a Rose to have the finished soil level at the point which the stems of the Rose grow out of the root.

Roses like an open position with good air circulation and once you’ve planted it give it a good old watering.

Some slow release fertiliser through the growing season will give them a balanced mix of nutrients.

People think roses can be tricky to look after especially with pruning, but they’re not really and the beautiful scented blooms they give throughout the season really make up for a bit of TLC.

Right now It’s too nice to be inside writing a blog on caring for roses... but I’ll let you know when I’ve done it and you can check it out on my website www.peacefulspaces.co.uk

This week gave me an opportunity to catch up on my own garden project, the veg patch.

Some serious w**ding and levelling was done before laying w**d suppressing matting and then rather a lot of gravel. A couple of before, during and after shots below.

Not too much in the beds at the moment, but there’s plenty of seeds coming on nicely in the greenhouse ready to plant out in the next couple of weeks.

You don’t need a big patch or a greenhouse to grow a few bits of your own, but make sure you grow what you like, what you’ll eat. It’s a great time to get the kids involved as part of their home education.

Some tomato seeds on the kitchen windowsill, a few potatoes in a sack or old plant pot. You can even use a small area of an existing flower bed for a few carrots or green beans, after all, that’s where veg used to be grown, in amongst the planting.

It’s not too late in the season to have a go, but if you’re not sure where to start, I’ll happily answer any questions you may have.

One of the benefits of having chickens is that right now I’m not battling to find eggs to buy.

But a downside of letting your chickens free range is that you cannot train then to walk ‘around’ your hyacinths!

They bring a smile to me though as I watch them have fun pecking around.

Sitting in the garden listening to the buzz of honey bees on hyacinths and Skimmia japonica. They are very grateful for the early flowering bulbs and shrubs that have been flowering since late autumn.

What a beautiful day! The sun is shining and spring bulbs are blooming.

Despite the strange and unknown situation we find ourselves in, Mother Nature still carries on with shrubs starting to leaf up, grass growing and wildlife coming out of hibernation.. I love it!

Getting outside, getting fresh air and breathing in the spring smells has lots of health benefits as well as just making us feel more positive, creative, improved concentration and reduced anxiety.

If you can get outside into your garden then do, if you don’t have a garden space then open the doors and windows to benefit from some fresh air.

Even with social distancing at the moment we can still go for a short walk, maybe around your village or town.

Peaceful spaces is designing as normal and if you would like us to post about something specific on here over the next few weeks (garden related) then please let us know.

Otherwise keep well and safe.

Despite the wind and rain some of our earlier flowering herbaceous plants battle on!

A walk round the garden this morning revealed these:

Clematis cirrhosa 'Jingle Bells’ aptly named because it flowers through the Christmas period and into early spring. After these creamy white delicate flowers, silky seed heads will follow.

I love Bergenia cordifolia for its large evergreen leaves which tinge red/pink from autumn into spring and then these beautiful purple/ pink flowers appear in spring. Another evergreen one so great for foliage in your beds all year and they don’t mind where you put them, full sun or just as great in shade.

While the weather is like this It’s hard to think about your garden, but it’s a great time of year to re design your beds in order to reap the benefits for the rest of the year. Get in touch if you’d like some help.

Despite challenging weather conditions this week, another Peaceful Spaces garden design starts to come to life!

This is a great time of year to have your garden space designed ready for construction and planting in spring.

Watch this space as this front garden gets transformed.

February already, bulbs are starting to poke their heads through the somewhat soggy soil, and this Lenten Rose, Helleborus orientalis, only planted last year has filled out beautifully.

Of course it’s not a rose at all but It gets its name from the fact the flowers somewhat resemble a small single rose. And ‘Lenten’ because as one of the earliest flowering perennials, it’s usually blooming during lent.

So you maybe thinking of giving something up for lent this year but my advice... don’t give up planting a few of these in your garden! They are low maintenance, give early colour, there’s a large range of colours and they’ll take you through until your bulbs bloom. Also, being semi evergreen there’ll be a bit of structure in your planting area all year.

What’s not to love?
