Incredibly sad news.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to share some unbelievably sad news with you. Our friend, colleague and all-round beautiful AG mag star Ruth Hayes has passed away whilst on holiday in her beloved Alpujarras in Spain. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family at this difficult time. Ruth was a fantastic gardening journalist, plantswoman and joyful person who spread little seeds of care and consideration wherever she went. Her smile and positive energy lit up a room, and her wise words helped so many gardeners during her many years at AG magazine. Ruth was such an advocate for the natural world and wildlife and so as we grieve our dear colleague and friend, we are trying to take more time to garden and remember her in the birds, bees and butterflies we see around us and to reflect on how truly wonderful it was to know, and work with, Ruth these past years. Xx

Homegrown carrots harvested very early in the morning. What a great start to the day!

Asturian tree cabbage is one of my favourite cabbages. A short-lived perennial.

Heading inside to prepare these beauties for lunch.

Looking forward to this!

Yeo Valley Organic Garden Festival. It was my first time visiting the garden and this new-ish festival. There were stalls with plants and garden related bits and pieces, some delicious food and a beautifully decorated marquee with a stage for the talks. I spotted Poppy Okotcha, Chris Hull and Frances Tophill. And had a good catch up with Alan Down and Eddie Bailey of Rhizophillia. The festival runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The organic gardens were a delight with so many gorgeous plant combinations, there was a lot of ooh-ing and ahh-ing and quite a bit of ‘I want to do that in my garden’.

September. There is so much to harvest at this time of year. Rather than trying to process it all, I often freeze berries, fruits and vegetables to can or make into jams, jellies, syrups and w**e over the cooler months.
These are rose hips from Rosa rugosa alba, which I use for syrup (rich in vitamin C ) and w**e (excellent for drinking chilled or for cooking).

Here’s something to look out for in your garden!
During prolonged hot summers, the stones of avocado pears may germinate in your compost heap. What to do if you find one in your garden or compost heap -

Before the first frost arrives, gently lift the plant from the compost or soil and transfer to a pot.

Carefully fill around the roots with compost and water until the water runs out of the base of the pot. Then, take the plant indoors and grow it on in a bright spot, away from icy draughts.

You can pinch out the growing tip to encourage a bushier plant.

You can apply a weak feed solution to the compost every couple of months during from late spring to early autumn.

If growing houseplants on windowsills, remember to bring the plants into the room before closing the curtains. This means that they won’t get trapped in a pocket of cold air overnight.

Avocado plants can grow quite large, pot on into larger containers to avoid the root ball becoming pot-bound.
