We’ve been so busy on the tools and project managing this summer that we’re a little behind on sharing all the amazing projects we’ve completed over the last few months — so it’s time to catch up!
One project we finished last month, and absolutely loved working on, was the design and build of a brand-new community garden for the wonderful KPC Youth & Community.
KPC is a very special charitable youth club and community centre that provides a safe and nurturing environment for young people, offering training, recreation, advice and support, while creating opportunities to improve wellbeing.
This project had a particularly special connection for us too. Gav used to visit KPC as a young teenager — playing pool, playing on their PlayStation 1 and practising with his band in the music room. So, many years later, the opportunity to return and help create something for the next generation of young people was one he was incredibly grateful for.
🌱 THE PROJECT
We started by clearing the space and removing old, rotten and unsafe features before transforming it into a safe, accessible and welcoming community growing garden.
The finished space includes:
🌿 Existing planters repaired and made safe
🌿 New raised planters with trellis for climbing plants
🌿 A sheltered gazebo for outdoor learning and activities
🌿 An IBC water tank for rainwater collection and conservation
🌿 A new polytunnel complete with potting benches
🌿 A new shed for tools and materials
🌿 A new perimeter picket fence
🌿 W**d membrane and bark chippings creating a softer, accessible surface
🌿 A diverse mix of sensory planting, including herbs, vegetables, strawberries, flowers and climbers
🌿 A new picnic bench for communal seating
🌿 A new Hotbin composting unit
We were also delighted to provide training and upskilling opportunities for Itec Skills students during the build, and to finish the project with an interactive community open day attended by Cllr. Heidi Bennett, Pen-y-fai and Court Colman and Cllr Huw David
A huge thank you to the local businesses and organisations who contributed to making the project possible: Nottage Timber Merchants, Litchard Tool Hire, Talbot Block LTD, Wern Wood Timber & Agricultural Merchants, Nolan Recycling Ltd, Williams Supplies 💚
And a massive thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund for generously funding the project and enabling us to create a space that can be used, enjoyed and grown by KPC and its young people for years to come.
Finally, thank you to Sam and the amazing team at KPC for your hospitality, enthusiasm and support throughout the project. It was a genuine pleasure to work with you 💚
