The benefits of an organised home

We’ve all heard the saying "Tidy home, tidy mind " and its many variants. The saying actually dates back to around 1947, back in the day when women generally stayed at home. It was almost a sign that you 'had it together' if your home was organised and polished to within an inch of its life but, in today’s modern society, things are very different. If you’re not convinced here’s why this life philosophy does actually work:

1. Clutter Creates Chaos
If you are constantly surrounded and overwhelmed with clutter, your mind will start to feel the same way. Think back to those mornings when you couldn’t find your purse or your car keys and remember how you left the house later than normal. The traffic had built up, you sat in jams and you had to explain to your colleagues at work why you were late. You were constantly playing catch up all day. Which brings us on to...

2. Stress causes friction in the home
A Kitchen full of dirty dishes, a bedroom floor covered in clothes, these are all' jobs to be done'. If you find yourself constantly picking up after others it can start to drain you and your emotions, arguments start and everyone is cross. Changing our habits now and preventing the build up of mess in the first place can reduce the negative way we treat each other as a family.

3. Children pick up bad habits
It’s so important that parents teach children good habits and get them to help out around the house, even just keeping their bedrooms tidy or making their beds, is an important life lesson for their future.

4. Work and home life are harder to separate
Coming home from work and having to do another 3 hours’ work on tidying the house is not good for any of us. With a little organisation, this can be improved, meaning you have time to actually relax.

5. You won’t feel refreshed surrounded by mess
Part of looking after our mental health is being able to take time out. Our homes should be our place of sanctuary, always calm and relaxing not surrounded by clutter. The whole concept of being organised gives us so many benefits. Small habit changes weaved into your day to day routine will soon become second nature and they can be done even if you think you don’t have the time. An organised and tidy home will have so many positive effects on your well-being, relationships and state of mind. If you can remove the clutter from your life and streamline your processes at home this will have a huge positive effect on every aspect of your life and I can help you achieve it

This one catches a lot of people out on Vinted and eBay. Anyone can list something at £40. What matters is what it actually sold for. Filter your search to sold items and have a look. Sometimes the number is a nice surprise, and sometimes it’s a bit of a shock.

Either way, it takes two minutes, and it stops you pricing something so high it sits there for months. Or so low that you wish you hadn’t.

And if the sold price is tiny, you’ve just saved yourself the effort. Donate it and move on you will thank me later folks! x

What's the hardest thing to get rid of when decluttering? Rarely is it ever the practical stuff.

Some of the biggest declutters I do come after a life change, not a New Year's resolution. A divorce. A house move. A family setup that looks completely different to how it did a year before. I know this one personally I went through a divorce and a house move myself, and clearing physical space was part of how I got through it, not just another task on a list.

Half term is nearly here, which makes it a good time to get the kids sorting their own stuff.

I can't stress this enough, though don’t do it all for them. Put a box out, ask them to pick what they’ve outgrown or stopped playing with, and let them make the call.

Small piles are easier than whole rooms. Twenty minutes in the morning, then go and do something fun.

Kids are often more ruthless than adults once they get going. And if there’s space cleared before Christmas, the new things from Santa have somewhere to go.

I've extensive experience working with both adults and children alike, so if you’d rather have a hand with it, feel free to DM me.

Fourth pair of scissors. My client bought them in a shop car park, knowing full well she owned scissors somewhere. She just couldn’t tell me where.

She called it fire-fighting mode. Never ahead of anything, always reacting. Birthday cards bought at 4pm on the day because the box was in the loft. Chargers. Once, a printer cartridge for a printer she’d already given away.

Rebuying in a panic costs the money, and it costs the time you spent hunting first.

We sorted her cupboards by what she actually uses. She hasn’t bought scissors since thankfully!

Sick of buying things twice?

Perhaps it's time to book a session with me.

One couple I worked with hadn’t had anyone round in years. Every birthday was a restaurant booking. Every catch-up with a friend was a coffee shop.

Nobody had ever said a word about the house. They just couldn’t face people seeing it.

“We just don’t have people over.” It adds up, and not only in money.

A few weeks after we finished, my client sent me a photo of a full dining table. First time in years. She’d cooked for her sister, and it cost a fraction of the restaurant.

When did you last have people round?

I love to host - what about you?

Two questions come up in my DM's time and time again. What does a professional organiser actually do, and what does it cost?

The cost bit depends entirely on the job, so there's no single answer here. I charge £45 an hour and work in blocks of 4 - 8 hours typically.

The "what happens" bit is question is easier.

No judgement, no lecture about how it got this way. We start by talking through what's actually needed day-to-day, then work through it together, at a pace that doesn't overwhelm.

It's rarely as dramatic as people expect. It's steady, practical work.

I have yet to have a client regret booking a session. 😉

Three years ago today I moved into a smaller house. My marriage had ended, so there were a lot of decisions about what came with me.

With less room, I had to be really honest about what deserved the space. Cupboards of kitchen appliances, and more home decor than any room needed. Most of it went.

My boys downsized too. They went from having a playroom to not having one. It mostly sat empty anyway, and now we spend our time together in the same open plan space.

The house has come together in stages. Bespoke storage under the stairs, then fitted wardrobes, each one added when I could. Every area has been thought through, so nothing got squeezed in as an afterthought. Even the guy building the stairs was impressed with the design - glad I found him to bring it to life!

A quick clean of my house now takes 30 minutes at most. The house is ready for guests pretty much all the time, so there’s no panic tidy when someone texts to say they’re popping round.

My friends who come round keep telling me it feels like a big warm hug. I like that, and I think that’s because nothing in it is fighting for attention. Everything is there because we chose it.

Three years on, I'm 100% settled, and I wouldn't swap it for a bigger house.

Ever heard of "body doubling"?

For those who haven't it's simple "Body doubling is when another person stays with you while you complete a task," as I explained to Ideal Home.

It's popular in the ADHD and neurodivergent community, but honestly, it works for anyone who struggles to get going alone.

Sorting a loved one's belongings after they've died is one of the hardest things I help with.

Most people put it off. The bags get filled, pushed to the back of a wardrobe, and stay there for years because opening them hurts.

What works is shrinking the job. Take one bag at a time. Hold each thing and see whether it makes you feel something good. If it does, keep it. If you're keeping it out of guilt, that's worth noticing.

Several bags often become one box of what really matters.
I recently helped a client take a stack of bags down to a single box.

Every decision was hers. I was there to keep things moving and make sure nothing got rushed.

If you've got bags like this at home and can't face them, feel free to get in touch.

So what does a professional organiser actually do well thats a fair question and hopefully this helps.

I trained as a professional organiser during lockdown, off the back of being the friend who was always sorting everyone else's cupboards for fun. Six years in now, still based here in Warrington.

I've worked on everything from a chaotic childs bedroom to a house someone was clearing after losing a parent. Different jobs, same approach and always with zero judgement, just systems that actually stick once I've gone.

If you've been thinking about getting in touch for a while, that's honestly how most of my clients start.

You can message me anytime for a no obligation chat .
