A little pot of gold for the winter garden…

Winter Aconites (Eranthis hyemalis) are among the very first flowers to appear, often pushing their cheerful golden heads through the soil in January and February — sometimes even through snow.

They’re wonderful planted beneath deciduous trees, along woodland edges or naturalised through grass, where they’ll gradually spread into a glowing early-spring carpet.

And at a time when there’s precious little else in flower, those bright yellow blooms provide a valuable early source of food for emerging pollinators. 🐝

Plant now. Feed them later.

The garden is absolutely buzzing at the moment — and it’s a lovely reminder that what we plant now can make a real difference to pollinators next year.

Autumn-planted bulbs provide some of the earliest and most welcome sources of nectar and pollen, from Crocus and Winter Aconites in late winter to Alliums later in the season.

A few good choices for a pollinator-friendly spring garden:

Crocus tommasinianus
Winter Aconite
Wild Daffodil
Snake’s Head Fritillary
Allium ‘Purple Sensation’

Plant this autumn, then sit back and wait for the buzz. 🐝

Meet one of the more eccentric members of our daffodil collection… Narcissus ‘Rip Van Winkle’

With its wonderfully ruffled, almost starburst-like golden flowers, this little heritage daffodil is quite unlike the classic trumpet varieties we usually picture when we think of daffodils.

Small, characterful and perfect for adding something a little unusual to the spring garden.

Plant in autumn and enjoy the surprise when it emerges next spring.

Is August too early to start thinking about spring bulbs? 🌱

Not at all.

Most spring-flowering bulbs are planted in autumn, so now is the perfect time to start planning what you’d like to see appearing in your garden next spring.

Think drifts of daffodils, carpets of crocuses, early spring colour and plenty of flowers for emerging pollinators. 🐝

One exception? Tulips. They generally benefit from being planted a little later, once the weather and soil have cooled — often in November.

Our autumn bulb collection is available to order now, ready for planting season.

5 bulbs to plant this autumn for pollinators

A beautiful spring garden can be good news for bees too.

By choosing bulbs that flower at different points through the season, you can provide nectar and pollen from the first mild days of the year right through into late spring.

Here are five of our favourites:

Winter Aconite – Eranthis hyemalis
One of the earliest flowers to appear, providing a valuable food source when relatively little else is in bloom.

Crocus tommasinianus
An early-flowering crocus that’s brilliant for naturalising and loved by visiting bees.

Crocus flavus sap flavus
Beautiful golden flowers offering another early source of nectar and pollen.

Allium ‘Purple Sensation’
Those spectacular purple globes aren’t just beautiful — their many tiny flowers are a magnet for bees and other pollinators.

Camassia quamash
Flowering later in spring, Camassia helps continue the supply of food after many of the earliest bulbs have finished.

The idea is simple: plant for succession.

A few carefully chosen bulbs can provide flowers over a much longer period — while giving you months of changing colour in the garden too.

Plant this autumn. Feed the spring. 🐝

If you love a garden that looks a little less planted and a little more as though spring simply appeared, these are five of our favourites:

Wild Daffodils — delicate, native and wonderful for naturalising in grass and woodland edges.

Crocus tommasinianus — one of the earliest splashes of colour, and brilliant for spreading naturally over time.

British Bluebells (hyacinthoides non scripts) — perfect beneath deciduous trees and shrubs for that classic woodland display.

Snowdrops — tiny but invaluable in the depths of winter, returning year after year once established.

Muscari neglectum — a beautiful little grape hyacinth that works wonderfully through grass, borders and informal planting.

Autumn might feel a long way from spring — but the garden you want next year starts with what you plant now.
