It’s been a while since I don’t do cups with handles. This month so many things are happening at the same time, that I totally forgot about them. Since July are sitting behind more urgent projects. Today they will be glazed! Saluti a tutti!

Sometimes there is a floating presence in the studio. I unplug the brain and move like a ghost, unreflexive, just responding to the demands of the material, the space, the buckets, the colors. Everything is reclaiming attention, and I just move around, slowly, because it is summer and I unconsciously economize my energy.

Hours pass and maybe I complete one, two, three tasks. I start processes that take a lot of effort, knowing they will stay interrupted for a month or two. And then, unexpectedly, I complete a beautiful piece—an idea that has been sitting there, claiming my attention, for decades.

I sometimes torture myself a little because of the lack of focus or structure. I try to teach myself discipline and strategy. I think and observe and calculate and try to impregnate my muscles with this logic. And the result is a horrible depression that doesn’t allow joy in this craft that I love the most.

So I need to reset, abandon, allow myself to fail completely. Go to the bottom of the ocean, let the weight drown me. I know I will surface again. It happened before. And before. Each time I learn a new trick to make the cycle faster.

One of the things that helps is this second when, by chance, I see something that catches my eye and makes me feel awake again: I did something I respect.

And it was born from my absolute chaos, this chaos I am trying so badly to tame.

I love the empty city in summer. It makes you realise all the noise is actually yours, and so it can be the silence. One of the biggest glories about crafting for a living is that you can listen to music all the time. I revisited Dire States this week, discovered Boards of Canada and spend some time with my old pal David Byrne, who is teaching me the art of being cheerful in dystopian times.

I have been obsessed with Mozart’s requiem these past days. Today I fully understand the grandiosity of loss… my tungsten steel trimming tool passed due to gravity and stubbornness (removing the splash pan from the wheel, even though I noticed the tool besides, I carried on like and idiot and didn’t avoid the catastrophe. At least you left in style, my friend. Last piece you trimmed is this beautiful 3lt Fermenting Pot to be… kiln god may help us.

In Spanish, the word Contact is Contacto: con tacto. Literally, With touch. In close contact with clay is a sentence I hear myself repeat to people in workshops. Touch as specifically you can. I am so driven to explore this sense through the material I work with, not only while I work, where different parts of the body get involved, but how objects might be felt and perceived by lips, face and hands once they are in use. From all forms of close contact, hugs with the dear ones is a favourite.
