A Journey to Find Licuala in Its Natural Habitat
After 10 years of knowing and admiring this palm—whether it is known as Licuala maculata, Licuala sp. Borneo, or Licuala “Leopard” Borneo—I finally had the opportunity to visit its natural habitat.
The journey was incredibly long and challenging. After arriving at the airport in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, I still had to travel by car for approximately 8 hours to reach a relative’s house. From there, the adventure continued with a 2-hour motorcycle ride along muddy dirt roads, especially difficult after rainfall.
Upon reaching the last village, the journey was far from over. We continued on foot for another 2 hours through the forest. What surprised me most was that not every forest contained these beautiful Licuala palms. After all the effort and hours of travel, we found only around 10 mature specimens in the area.
However, the forest offered more than just Licuala. Several fascinating Pinanga species were also present, including Pinanga crassipes, Pinanga subterranea, and Pinanga ridleyana. Seeing these rare palms growing in their natural environment made every step of the journey worthwhile.
For a plant enthusiast, standing in front of a palm that I had admired for a decade was an unforgettable experience. The long hours of travel, the muddy roads, and the challenging trek through the forest all became part of a remarkable adventure—one that deepened my appreciation for the beauty and rarity of Borneo’s palm diversity.
