A new project begins 🪟

This morning, our team started work at the beautiful Haddington House Hotel in Dún Laoghaire, carefully removing the original sash windows ready for restoration.

There’s something very satisfying about giving historic windows a new lease of life — retaining their character while improving their performance for many more years to come.

We’ll be sharing more from this project as the work progresses.

On Friday, we took a well-deserved break and headed to Axe Club | Axe Throwing in Dublin & Wicklow in Glendalough for a day of fun! 🪓🎯

We had the perfect excuse to celebrate too — Szymon’s big birthday 🎉 while also saying a bittersweet goodbye to Lèo, who has been part of the team as our intern over the summer. 💙

A great day, plenty of laughs, and even better memories! Here’s to celebrating the people who make our team what it is. 🥳

Is a bespoke door better than a standard door? 🚪

For period and older homes, the answer can often be yes — particularly when the original opening isn’t a standard size.

A bespoke timber door is made specifically for the existing opening and can be designed to complement the character and proportions of the property. Details such as panel layout, mouldings, glazing and traditional door furniture can all be carefully considered rather than trying to make an off-the-shelf door fit.

At sashwindows.ie, we use Accoya timber for our bespoke doors. Its exceptional stability and resistance to rot make it particularly well suited to external joinery, while still allowing us to recreate the traditional detailing that gives a period property its character.

The result? A door that looks right for the house, fits properly and is built for long-term performance.

Accoya isn’t just for windows! 🌳

We use Accoya extensively in sash window restoration, particularly for replacing sections of timber that are beyond repair — but its uses go far beyond windows.

Exceptionally durable, stable and resistant to rot, Accoya is ideal for a wide range of exterior applications where timber needs to withstand the Irish weather.

This before & after is a great example of just how versatile this remarkable timber can be.

These two bay windows are certainly keeping us on our toes! 👀

What initially looked like a straightforward restoration has revealed a few hidden challenges once we opened up the frames. That’s often the reality of working on historic buildings — you never know exactly what you’ll find until you get started.

Thankfully, after many years restoring period windows, we enjoy solving these puzzles and finding the right solution for each unique building.

🏡✨ A major restoration project underway in Dún Laoghaire.

We are currently completing the full restoration of two bay windows on this protected structure, working closely with the local Conservation Officer and County Council throughout the process to ensure the building’s historic character is preserved.

The existing windows had been heavily altered over the years and were in a severely deteriorated condition. Our brief was to replace them with bespoke timber sash windows and frames that more closely reflect the original design and proportions of the house, while delivering the performance expected of a modern window.

Projects like this are about more than replacing windows—they are about safeguarding the architectural heritage of our streets for future generations.

We look forward to sharing the finished result soon.
