Untrue. Trees can grow into bedrock, given some irrigation during the dry season. Prickly pear cactus doesn't even need that. Their roots produce carbonic acid and dissolve the bedrock, which also allows for water to infiltrate when it does rain. After several years, irrigation is no longer necessary. The oldest trees here are 4 years old, the youngest 2.

In order: Paulownia, Robinia and Tagasaste trees. All are nitrogen fixers, all flower prolifically. The tagasaste is mostly done flowering-the flowers are almost all now seed pods. All are fast growing hardwoods. The tagasaste grows into a small tree/big bush and is very good as a nurse trees for other plants, protecting them from harsh sun and bringing up moisture from far below with its taproot. All are good for honeybees and other pollinators. I grew the robinia and tagasaste from seeds planted 4 years ago, and the paulownia was from a small cutting around that time. The paulownia is not very drought hardy, the other two are. Just experimenting, seeing what works in reforesting the extremely depleted thorny and rocky parts of Israel.

Feeding black soldier fly larvae to the fish in my aquaponics system. The BSFL feed off our home organic waste. They are 30% protein, 40% fat. The fish eating them are theoretically edible and will soon be joined by tilapia. The fish waste fertilizes vegetables in the aquaponics systems, which filter the water so it can be recycled back to the fish.

This tagasaste tree we planted as a seed 3 years ago is now about 2 meters tall, 3 meters wide and blooming for the bees...

This tagasaste tree we planted as a seed 3 years ago is now about 2 meters tall, 3 meters wide and blooming for the bees. A caterpillar, about 12cm long, is hanging out on one of the branches.
