AKDA integrates the disciplines of architecture, interior design, sustainability, furniture, lighting and product design under a singular ethos. Established by Amit Khanna in 2004, the studio philosophy is to make regional specificity and sustainability intrinsic to the design process and product. Every object we produce, be it a 60,000SF office building or a 0.5SF light fixture, undergoes the same scrutiny of process and exactitude; A process that is founded in suitable materiality and innovation, irrespective of appearance. The quest for absolute quality implies that we follow a unique system of design development; one in which we allow ourselves to learn and imbibe from the skills and experience of people who actually craft the buildings and objects that we design. Their early involvement acknowledges them as equal stakeholders in the process, and allows us as a studio, to better predict construction outcomes and quality control. The firm was chosen as one of only five architects among 20 designers in India under the age of 35 to exhibit work in February 2013 (DxD, Alliance Francaise). We were one of the Young Designers of 2013(IA&B), Superstars of Design in 2014 (Society Interiors) and were also selected as one of the top 50 emerging architects in India by iGEN Design Forum 2014. Our work has won numerous awards & has been published in architectural and design journals around the world. Current projects include commercial & industrial buildings, corporate offices, hospitality, boutique retail, multifamily housing, private houses & furniture.

“A façade is where a building’s architectural expression meets its environmental performance.”

As India’s cities grow denser and climate conditions become more demanding, the building envelope has a larger role to play.

At AKDA, the building envelope is an integral part of the architecture, shaping how a building responds to its climate, context, and occupants. Across projects, this means looking beyond the surface to consider how façades can moderate heat and light, support comfort and contribute to the building’s performance over time.

At Villa Ravine, the landscape shaped the plan.

Set in Shimla, this home was conceived around its views of the valley and a seasonal stream running through the ravine below. Two parallel linear volumes are arranged perpendicular to the view, placing the living spaces at the centre and the bedrooms at the corners, opening to the landscape on two sides.

The pitched roof and gabled ends extend this relationship with the valley, while a double-height space brings light and volume into the heart of the house. Grey slate, military green roofing, and locally sourced wood reference the region’s material language, giving the interiors a warm, contemporary character.

In this Central Delhi apartment, classical detailing is reinterpreted through a contemporary interior.

Framed wall mouldings, panelled doors and herringbone flooring draw from Delhi’s architectural history, while a dramatic oculus above the private dining area introduces a moment of openness overhead. Set against the sunset-yellow dining chairs, it brings natural light and a distinct vertical character to the space.

The interiors bring together the many influences that shape Delhi, expressed through material, proportion and detail.

In industrial architecture, efficiency is rarely just a question of numbers. It is spatial.

How does material move through the building? How is structure organised around the production floor? How are services routed without interrupting the working area? How can the building accommodate the scale and movement of machinery?

These decisions shape the spaces between things, and in an industrial building, those spaces are where the work happens.

At a recent 1.4 lakh sq. ft. industrial complex in Pune, floor-to-floor heights have been planned around the movement of heavy machinery and overhead services, keeping the working areas clear and unobstructed. The prefabricated steel structure lets the manufacturing facility and workspace take shape with efficiency built in.

The facade of the Kanpur Residence is defined by a balance of material, volume and texture.

Natural wood takes centre stage, extending across the facade, louvres, screens and ceilings to create a warm, continuous design language. Neolith and black granite add contrast and weight, while aluminium windows finished with a wood texture bring durability without disrupting the material palette.

Across the four-level residence, these elements come together to reinterpret the contemporary Indian home, bringing traditional materiality into a distinctly modern architectural expression.

An entrance can be more than a threshold.

At H26, a commercial project, the arrival unfolds through a courtyard that brings together light, air, and movement. Open to the sky and wrapped in a brick jaali, it creates a pause within the building while naturally ventilating the spaces around it.

The exposed brick and structure continue the project’s industrial language, making the journey into H26 as much a part of the architecture as the spaces beyond.

At SiriHaus, the interiors are shaped by a restrained palette of natural materials, where warmth comes through texture, craft and the quiet presence of carefully chosen objects.

Warm wood meets egg-shell terrazzo and softly textured plaster, creating a continuous material language across the living spaces.

In the bedrooms, oak salvaged during the renovation is repurposed into narrow strips to create a hardwood floor, giving an old material a new life. Elsewhere, stainless steel, aluminium and stone bring durability and practicality into the palette.

The furniture follows the same reductive approach. Wood, stone and metal pieces sit alongside neutral upholstery and restored leather furniture, allowing each object to hold its own within the space.

A closer look at the material language of House of a Tree.

Gwalior mint stone, autumn-brown sandstone, timber, and Italian marble come together across the house, shifting in texture, scale, and pattern from one space to another.

From the radial sandstone flooring that leads towards the trees to the stone brickwork, wooden ceilings, and carefully framed openings, the details are designed to keep the material experience connected to the courtyards and gardens beyond.
