Material choices can connect different eras of design within the same space. At Mind Studio, exposed steel and aluminium draw on the industrial aesthetic of the 1960s to 1980s, while their precision and finish lend the interiors a distinctly forward-looking edge.

This interplay between nostalgia and futurism gives the materials a relevance beyond any single design period.

Retail interiors are often redesigned every five or ten years to keep pace with changing collections and display requirements. For Open Atelier Mumbai, this raises a larger concern: when an interior is repeatedly stripped back and rebuilt, the materials, resources and design effort invested in it are discarded simply because the retail offering has changed.

At Mind Studio, Pune, the challenge was to break this cycle. Rather than designing around a fixed display arrangement, the space incorporates custom screens, mirrored surfaces and timber elements that can be rearranged as the collection evolves, without requiring a complete overhaul.

This approach draws from the Italian ethos of longevity, where value lies not in keeping a space unchanged, but in creating one that remains relevant as its needs evolve.

Designing for longevity means making room for change without making the existing redundant.

Architecture and design is not a solitary act! Here, the strongest ideas emerge when every person on the team, from designers, to clients and collaborators are part of the same conversation.

At Open Atelier Mumbai,we fiercely believe that continuous dialogue allows perspectives to be questioned, ideas to evolve and decisions to become more considered.

For us, collaboration is not a stage of the process. It is how the design takes shape.

What is one value you believe makes good design better?

A single continuous element makes room for more.

At this residence in Mumbai, the daughter’s bedroom brings storage, display, sleeping and study into one integrated framework around the bed. Open shelving extends into the wardrobe, while the desk continues the same element, making use of the room’s vertical space without adding separate pieces.

By combining these functions within one element, the design makes efficient use of the room while keeping the overall composition cohesive and uncluttered.

A classical vocabulary, interpreted for contemporary living.

In this Mumbai residence, panelled cabinetry, moulded fronts and brass detailing bring a classical vocabulary into the kitchen, while the clean geometry, marble surfaces and integrated appliances keep the overall setting contemporary.

The balance is deliberate, giving the kitchen the richness of classical detailing without making it feel overtly traditional.

How do you bring the idea of Italian living into an Indian home without simply recreating an Italian interior?

At Mind Studio, the answer lies in translating its values rather than its appearance. A restrained palette of timber and open-pore travertine creates warmth and tactility, while generous glazing brings daylight deep into the space and keeps the surrounding greenery part of the experience.

A continuous timber ceiling adds the final touch of warmth to the open plan, allowing the products from various European brands such as Cattelan Italia, Versace Home, Domkapa, Laskasas, and Glammfire to be experienced in a setting that feels closer to a home than a conventional showroom.

The design of the space is less about reproducing a particular Italian style and more about bringing its values of material richness, considered proportions and appreciation for things made to last into a profoundly Indian setting.

A contemporary backdrop, softened by the outdoors.

The outdoors finds its way into Mind Studio through generous glazing, bringing greenery and natural light into the experience of the furniture. The changing light brings out the grain of wood, the sheen of metal, the softness of leather and the depth of stone of all the pieces, allowing these materials to be experienced as they might be in a home rather than against the uniformity of a conventional showroom.

Reimagining a showroom as a setting for living.

The design for the experience centre for Mind Studio moves beyond the conventional idea of a luxury showroom, creating an environment where products are experienced within a larger setting rather than displayed in isolation.

Materials, furniture and objects are brought together to suggest how they might come together in a home, allowing visitors to understand their relationship with the space and with one another.

The result is a more considered way of experiencing the collection, where context the pieces are placed in becomes as important as the pieces themselves.

This upcoming home draws its warmth from the inseparability of colour and material.

Across various spaces, the palette holds to a single tonal family, from hues of sand to caramel, ochre, bronze, and deep umber. Ochre arrives as velvet, umber as fluted timber, depth as the veining in stone. True richness, however, comes through a touch of varied textures: channel-tufted velvet, deeply pleated drapery, veined stone, raw microcement, sheer linen.

Light is treated as structure—concealed within the architecture, drawn in through full-height glazing, or reduced to a single considered gesture at the bedside. Surfaces are left to breathe.

This is luxury understood as atmosphere: quiet, tactile, and designed to be felt.

🏗️Work is at full swing at the Mumbai office!

Two ceilings are taking shape, and each changes how the space beneath it feels. The ceiling over the workstations creates a boundary, floating like a canopy as the flooring shifts from marble to wood directly beneath its edge. The oak coffers in reception do the opposite—running unbroken overhead to create a composed, deliberate space, the kind you notice on the way in.
