What does it mean for Indian architecture to speak to the world on its own terms?

In the September issue of , architect .morphogenesis, Founder and Vice Chairperson of Morphogenesis, reflects on the conviction that has shaped the practice: architecture can be deeply rooted in climate, material, craft and culture while remaining wholly contemporary.

The conversation moves across scales, from intimate residences to vast workplaces and civic institutions, yet returns to a consistent set of principles. It considers sustainability not as an added layer, but as an intrinsic responsibility; vernacular intelligence as an enduring form of building science; and design not as the pursuit of a recognisable signature, but as a response to the particularities of people and place.

Above all, the feature is a reflection on curiosity as a professional discipline. A reminder that architecture remains meaningful when each commission begins with fresh questions, and when the studio continues to be a place of discovery.

Our sincere thanks to and Ridhi Kale for approaching this journey with such thoughtfulness.

In Chattarpur, Delhi, Ananta House responds to a site shaped by mature trees, water bodies, and a landscape vision that closely interacts with the architecture.

The challenge was to create a home with a distinct architectural identity, while allowing it to remain deeply connected to its setting. The design draws from the infinity symbol, reinterpreted as a courtyard house where built form, landform, roof, water, and open spaces flow into one another.

Brick becomes the defining language of the house. Through corbelling, bands, jaalis, fins, and multiple on-site mock-ups, traditional masonry craft is explored as both expression and performance. The patterns are not decorative additions. They respond to orientation, shade the south and west façades, filter light, frame views, and bring depth to the curved form.

The house is also planned around seasonal comfort. Shaded internal courts support summer use, while winter sit-outs are placed to receive unobstructed sun. The pool helps cool the courtyard through evaporative cooling, making climate an active part of the spatial experience.

Here, craft, climate, and context come together to shape a home that feels rooted, responsive, and deeply experiential.

At TRIL Intellion Park, scale is organised through movement, landscape, and climate. Conceived as a large SEZ workplace campus in Gurugram, the masterplan differentiates vehicular, visitor, employee, and service movement, creating a clear sequence from arrival to workplace.

A landscaped podium forms the centre of the development, placing parking below a shared green plane and creating a predominantly pedestrian environment. Food courts, coffee lounges, a gym, and crèche facilities are integrated at this level, supporting movement, pause, and informal exchange throughout the day.

The environmental strategy is embedded within the planning, with buildings oriented along the north-south axis and inter-building distances calibrated for daylight and ventilation. Staggered massing admits monsoon winds while tempering harsher summer exposure. Together, these strategies shape a workplace campus that responds to the demands of scale, access, operational performance, movement, and climate.

We are grateful to be recognized as a Residential Design Trailblazer at the Forbes Realty Trailblazers.

For us, residential design has always been an exploration of how architecture can shape the everyday: creating homes that respond to their climate, context, communities, and the evolving ways in which we live.

We thank Forbes India for acknowledging this journey, and our clients, collaborators, and teams whose collective effort makes each project possible.

A contemporary interpretation of Greek architecture, the design draws on symmetry, proportion, and light to create a tranquil wellness experience. A luminous central skylight expands the visual volume, transforming the low ceiling into an open, sky-like space. Santorini-inspired relief walls and custom Greek mosaic tiles bring a sense of timeless craftsmanship, creating a serene indoor retreat where classical heritage meets contemporary luxury.

Before a residence is resolved in plan and volume, its façade becomes a critical design exploration where proportion, materiality, environmental response, and architectural intent converge.

For this private residence, the façade is developed as a composition of stone cladding, timber battens, soffits, glass railings, passive shading, integrated planters, and articulated terraces. Recessed grooves, parapets, and dry-cladding systems add depth, precision, and constructability, while features such as the double-height balcony enhance scale and identity.

Guided by the S.O.U.L. framework - Sustainability, Optimisation, Uniqueness, and Livability, the façade evolves beyond aesthetics to balance performance, efficiency, and user experience, establishing the foundation for a cohesive residential identity.

This early stage of exploration sets the direction for the larger architectural narrative, translating initial studies into a coherent residential identity.

Twin Oaks Residence is conceived as two private duplex homes held within a single architectural language, balancing individual identity with a shared architectural expression. Set within one of Delhi’s established residential enclaves, the residence derives its presence from proportion, restraint, and a calibrated relationship between openness and retreat.

Floating horizontal slabs, warm vertical screens, and transparent layers give the architecture clarity and depth, while a palette of grey stone, wood, and glass introduces material warmth without excess. Landscaped terraces and stepped planes shape the transition between the built form and the ground, softening its scale and enriching the experience of arrival.

Privacy is carefully orchestrated through screens, recesses, and layered thresholds, allowing the residence to remain outward-looking while retaining discretion. Rather than relying on overt display, the house expresses contemporary luxury through material refinement, spatial composure, and architectural restraint.

Designed as a pedestrian-first community, the streets are conceived as active social spaces rather than simply corridors of movement. They support opportunities to pause, meet, play and engage with the neighbourhood.

By prioritising walkability, shared greens and active public realms, the masterplan creates conditions for spontaneous encounters and everyday rituals that strengthen the social fabric of the community. As movement slows, streets become places for interaction, while the dissolution of thresholds allows communities to grow.

As workplaces become increasingly dense, one of the greatest design opportunities lies in bringing people closer to nature throughout the working day.

At Sattva Endeavor, the landscape is conceived as an active part of the workplace experience rather than the space surrounding the building. An Urban Forest forms the foundation of the ground plane, bringing together wooded trails, water bodies, butterfly habitats, outdoor meeting spaces, amphitheaters, and open lawns to support movement, collaboration, recreation, and moments of respite throughout the day.

This landscape strategy extends to the podium and the landscaped thirteenth-floor terrace, where outdoor workspaces, meeting areas, lounges, recreational spaces, and planting extend workplace activity beyond the building. Curvilinear pathways and layered planting create varied landscape experiences across the campus.

Here, landscape is not treated as an amenity surrounding the workplace but as an integral part of how it functions. Designing for impact means creating environments where nature supports everyday work, interaction, and wellbeing.

The success of a workplace is shaped as much by the experience of its people as by the efficiency of its planning.

At Sattva Endeavor, the workplace is designed to support changing ways of working through flexible floor plates that can accommodate multiple tenancy configurations, open workstations, cabins, and meeting pods. Community terraces, indoor cafés, gaming facilities, and interactive shared spaces are integrated into the planning to encourage collaboration and everyday interaction beyond conventional office environments.

The upper levels are designed to accommodate executive workspaces, boardrooms, and landscaped collaborative terraces, while daylight optimization, passive cooling, natural ventilation, and shading strategies are incorporated as part of a people-responsive workplace design approach.

The project achieved WELL Precertification in October 2024, confirming that its submitted documentation demonstrated an intent to design and build a high-performance WELL project. Designing for impact begins with placing people at the center of the workplace experience.
