Km. 488
Where house Km. 488 stands today, a characteristic road mender's house belonging to the national road agency ANAS originally was located. The history of these buildings dates back to 1830, when the official role of the "cantoniere" was first introduced. This road maintenance worker was responsible for the upkeep of a specific section of the road and was required to live right on site.
A shell of fair-faced concrete with Pompejan red cement serves as subtle nod to the existing ANAS building.
Km.488 is designed as a lively hub for people across all generations and cultures. Offering a diverse spectrum of educational and leisure activities, the facility purposefully strengthens togetherness, inclusion, and a sense of community in Fortezza.
