GISTO is a studio/workshop based between Milano and Treviso (Italy), operating at the intersection of architecture, design and craftsmanship. We develop projects from conception to production, working partially or entirely in all phases. Since 2010, we participate to a series of research projects with the support of important institutions such as: Salt Istanbul, Biennale di Architettura di Venezia, ZKM Karlsruhe, Fondazione Benetton and Oslo Architecture Triennale. We collaborate with: The Room produzioni, Studio Folder, Space Caviar, Fablab Torino, Officine Arduino, Xuni technology, Fablab Cfv and CaratteriMobili.

A traveling exhibition needs a system that can move, adapt to different places and people, and transform, with everything superfluous reduced to a minimum. We started from there, and from the image that best represents travel: the suitcase.

The system is made of six modules. Five carry the artworks and everything needed to set up the show: spotlights, accessories and technical components. The sixth holds the materials library. Starting from the size of a half pallet, we designed each module not only for transport, but to become the display itself.

Once on site, the modules open and, with simple rotations and assemblies, turn into display elements. The whole project is built on extremely simple gestures, made possible by highly complex details designed for the people who will install it, like the dry-fit trays that hold and stabilize the materials on the modules.

These drawings are part of the instruction and assembly booklet that travels with the exhibition.
All you need is a 3 mm Allen key, 2 to 4 people and 1 to 2 days of work.

The system recompose into three layouts to fit different spaces:
→ 50 sqm: one linear island for the materials library and a single low plinth for the artworks
→ 100 sqm: two islands for the materials library, which multiply visitor flows, and a landscape island for the artworks
→ 150 sqm and above: an “atomized” layout, with three islands for the materials library and a dedicated plinth for each artwork

A light, modular infrastructure that holds and displays, able to compress and expand to fit the available space.

We’re proud to announce our new exhibition design for “Residui. From waste to wonder”, which opened on 16 October at CerModern, the contemporary art center in Ankara, on the occasion of COP31, the 31st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Residui is an exhibition about the circular economy and the creative potential of agri-food waste, featuring nine limited-edition design pieces that show how what we consider waste can become material, object, wonder.

Promoted and organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, it is curated by Valentina Croci and HoperAperta (Patrizia Catalano and Martina Barberis Casagrande), with our exhibit design realized by Nolostand.

The project began with a very specific request: an exhibition design for a show conceived to be always on the move. After Ankara, Residui will continue its journey through the spaces of Embassies, Consulates and Italian Cultural Institutes around the world, adapting each time to different places and people.

A system able to move, adapt and tell a story of transformation.

In the next posts, we’ll show you how it works.

A travelling library of 100 landscape photography books, built to grow. Born from a dialogue between Obliquo, curator Mauro Zanchi, and shelving company Fantin, the project rejects a linear, one-way exhibition in favour of an open, non-hierarchical space that expands almost like a living organism.

The secret is Fantin’s Uno bookcase, in production for nearly 50 years. Used as intended and in unexpected ways, its components become bookcases, display stands, and connectors, endlessly recombined from the same simple parts.

The result is an installation that compresses or expands to fit any venue, stays clean and clear, holds its graphics by magnets, and can keep growing indefinitely.

We are thrilled to announce that our exhibition design project, "An Archive of Possible Machines. 80 years of Candy: visionary technologies from the archive”, has been selected for the ADI Design Index 2026 in Milan, which showcases projects that illustrate the transformations and new directions in contemporary Italian design. Created to mark Candy's 80th anniversary, the project treats memory as a malleable material that can still be reshaped.

The display takes its form from an everyday object of the Candy production district: an industrial shelf, perfected over the years to carry appliance components around the factory. We looked at it not only as a functional element but as a symbol, a simple yet complex support that has long set the work rhythms of workers and technicians.

Through this shelf, archival material such as sketches and prototypes of unbuilt machines becomes a contemporary imagination, where the history of design can be reshaped and given a new ending.

From idea to production.

The new wayfinding system for Festivaletteratura Mantova 2026 was developed through a process of testing, prototyping, and direct dialogue with the people who helped turn the project into reality.

Together with Graepel, we developed the perforated metal elements and the rotating weather vane, working directly on the production details to turn the design into a precise and functional system.

With Arche3D, we co-designed the 3D-printed moulds, which were then used by Martinotti to produce the concrete bases.

Thanks to Giovanardi, we were also able to develop the totems designed for the Festival’s main squares.

A project built together, through design, materials, experimentation, and production.

The new wayfinding system for Festivaletteratura Mantova 2026 stems from the idea of creating an infrastructure capable of accompanying the Festival throughout the urban space, guiding visitors and making its presence recognisable. Four principles guided the project: participation, sustainability, optimisation, and identity.

Participation was understood as both a design and production method. The system emerged through a dialogue between designers, technical expertise, and local businesses, in a process where the companies involved became active partners in its development. The collaboration with Graepel, Martinotti, Arche3D, and Giovanardi made it possible to transform design ideas into concrete solutions through an ongoing dialogue between design, materials, processes, and production.

Sustainability and optimisation also guided the choices made during production, assembly, and handling. The devices are conceived as open systems, designed to be durable, repairable, easy to transport, and easy to store, reducing complexity and, consequently, assembly time and handling operations.

Beyond colour, the identity of the system is reinforced by a weather vane positioned at the top of each device. Moving with the wind, it becomes a recognisable and playful sign that accompanies visitors through the spaces of the Festival.

A system designed not only to provide orientation, but also to establish the Festival’s presence within the urban space.

The result is three different trestle typologies, all designed to be solid, simple to build, and easily replicated directly on site, without the need for sophisticated machinery or complex fabrication processes.

We were invited by Vacuum Atelier as tutors for Hand On Reuse, a workshop held in a former cotton mill in the Bergamo area.

The workshop provided an opportunity to continue a research project we have been developing for over 12 years, exploring the relationship between architecture, design, craftsmanship, and reuse through workshops, self-produced projects, collaborations, and teaching activities.

Our research starts from studying the materials available on site and exploring their potential to be transformed into new objects through simple processes, while minimizing waste, processing, and the tools required. It is an attempt to bring ecological and economic thinking closer together, exploring how reuse can become a replicable and scalable practice.

During the workshop, we worked on the design of a system of trestles for the future tables of the cultural centre, using exclusively discarded metal materials found on site.

Following an initial mapping of the available materials, participants were divided into three groups, each working with a different type of material. Full-scale 1:1 drawings, cardboard and sheet-metal models, and subsequent testing led to the development of an initial prototype and, ultimately, to the production of two functional trestles by each group.
