AAM has concluded its official participation at the 23rd ARCASIA Forum 2026 in India. 🇲🇻

Representing the Maldives, AAM participated in the ARCASIA Council Meeting, Forum programmes, discussions and regional engagements alongside architectural institutes and professionals from across Asia.

The visit provided an important platform to strengthen AAM’s regional relationships, contribute the Maldivian perspective to architectural discourse, and explore opportunities for greater collaboration, knowledge exchange and professional development.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Indian Institute of Architects, ARCASIA, and everyone who welcomed and supported the AAM delegation throughout the Forum.

We return home with new connections, conversations and opportunities — and look forward to strengthening the Maldives’ presence within the wider Asian architectural community.

A tree is more than a tree.

It is shade, habitat, memory, and a vital part of island life. As development expands, we must ask what is gained, and what is lost.

One Size Fits None!

Sustainable housing in Villingili must move beyond fixed, standardised units and respond to different household needs, family structures, income levels, and ways of living.

AAM calls for housing that is flexible, community-centred, and designed through co-design, where the built environment serves people rather than forcing people to adapt to it.

“Tree Places” — Pattern 171 from A Pattern Language reminds us that trees are not obstacles to development, but foundations for living environments.

When planning a site, spaces can be arranged to coexist with existing trees rather than replace them. Around them, shaded commons emerge naturally, communities gather, children play, and pathways form through comfort rather than rigid planning.

AAM advocates for development that works with the existing ecological and social fabric of the site — preserving its microclimate, shade, and communal life while imagining more sustainable ways of living together.
