🌸 ORCHID TREE | Bauhinia sp.

At first glance, you might think you are looking at an orchid.

But this extraordinary flower grows on a tree — and its botanical relatives include beans and peas.

Known as the Orchid Tree, Bauhinia combines spectacular flowering with one of the most recognizable leaves in the plant world: a distinctive two-lobed leaf resembling a butterfly or camel’s hoof.

Look closely at the flowers and another story appears. Their contrasting colors and markings create powerful visual signals for visiting pollinators.

Then comes the transformation:

Flower → pod → seed → tree → flower again.

At Buena Fortuna Gardens, we don’t preserve plants simply as specimens. We grow them through their complete cycles — observing their flowers, harvesting their seeds, propagating the next generation, and keeping botanical diversity alive.

A garden becomes a living seed bank when the cycle continues. 🌱

THE BUTTERFLY LEAF

Bauhinia is famous for its distinctive two-lobed leaves, often compared to a butterfly, camel’s hoof, or two hearts joined together.

FROM FLOWER TO SEED

Surprise: the Orchid Tree is a legume.

Despite its orchid-like flowers, Bauhinia belongs to the Fabaceae — the bean and pea family.

Its seeds develop inside pods, revealing its botanical family.

TABASCO PEPPER
Capsicum frutescens
A living piece of Mesoamerican biodiversity

Small fruit. Ancient lineage. Serious fire.

Tabasco peppers belong to Capsicum frutescens, a tropical pepper species native to the Americas. Unlike many peppers whose fruits hang downward, Tabasco peppers characteristically grow upright, rising above the foliage as they mature from green to yellow-orange and finally bright red.

Their heat comes from capsaicin, the remarkable compound that gives chile peppers their characteristic fire.

At Buena Fortuna Gardens, growing peppers is about more than flavor. It is part of our work preserving living plant diversity, seeds, flavors and botanical knowledge adapted to our subtropical desert environment.

From seed → plant → flower → fruit → seed again. 🌱🌶️

The garden is a living seed bank.

🌿 Meet Noni — Morinda citrifolia

One of the most fascinating medicinal and food plants growing at Buena Fortuna Gardens.

Native across tropical Asia and the Pacific region, noni traveled with people throughout the Pacific Islands and became deeply woven into traditional food and healing practices.

Perhaps its most fascinating botanical feature is its fruit. What looks like a single fruit actually develops from many individual flowers that fuse together as they mature.

Noni is also famous for something less glamorous: its powerful aroma when fully ripe. Despite the smell, the fruit has a long history of traditional use, while the leaves, roots, bark, and fruit have all played different roles in Pacific cultures.

Modern research has identified numerous bioactive compounds in noni, but many of the health claims associated with commercial noni products remain under investigation. Its traditional importance, however, is remarkable.

Preserving plants like noni means preserving more than a species. It means keeping alive botanical diversity, traditional knowledge, and the relationship between plants and people.

🔥 Royal Poinciana (Delonix regia)

Native to the dry forests of Madagascar, Royal Poinciana is one of the world’s most spectacular flowering trees. Its brilliant scarlet-orange blossoms transform entire landscapes while providing seasonal nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Although planted throughout tropical and subtropical regions, wild populations in Madagascar have become increasingly rare due to habitat loss, making living collections and botanical gardens important for preserving awareness of this extraordinary species.

Its broad canopy creates cooling shade, supports wildlife, enriches the soil with fallen leaves, and reminds us that beautiful trees are also essential ecological partners.

At Buena Fortuna Gardens, every tree tells a story of biodiversity, conservation, and regeneration.

🌿 Visit our Living Seed Bank beginning October 15 and discover the remarkable plants that connect people, nature, and the future.
