In 1886, America didn't just receive a statue. She received a promise.
On June 17, 1885, after a treacherous Atlantic crossing, the French steamship _Isère_ arrived in New York Harbor.
Inside? 350 individual pieces of the Statue of Liberty, packed in 214 crates.
It was a gift from the people of France to the people of America. Designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Engineered by Gustave Eiffel (yes, the Eiffel Tower guy).
But here's what they don't teach you in school:
America couldn't afford to build the pedestal.
The government had no money. So Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher, started a fundraiser. He asked everyday Americans to donate pennies. Over 120,000 people gave - most gave less than a dollar.
The torch was lit on October 28, 1886. And for over 12 million immigrants at Ellis Island, she was the first thing they saw of their new home.
She wasn't just copper and steel. She was the mother of exiles. The symbol that said, "You are welcome here."
From France, with love. Built by the people, for the people.
