Why is rust preparation important before painting metal?

➡Rust should never be painted over without proper preparation.
If left untreated, it can continue to affect the metal underneath the coating, leading to poor adhesion, staining, blistering or premature coating failure🚫.
⏺️Before painting, rusted areas should be sanded and prepared, with loose rust and unstable material removed.
⏺️The area should then be primed with the correct primer, before continuing with the recommended topcoat system.

Severely rusted sheets should be replaced rather than painted over.

What is a water-break free surface? 💧

A water-break free surface is an important check when preparing galvanised metal before painting.

After cleaning the surface with the correct cleaner and rinsing thoroughly, the water should sheet evenly across the metal. If the water beads, pulls away or separates, there may still be contamination on the surface.

This means the surface may need to be cleaned again before priming or coating.

What is the difference between Dulux Rainshield and Dulux Waterproofing?

➡Dulux Rainshield and Dulux Waterproofing are both water-based systems, but they are designed to work differently.
➡Rainshield is a membrane-free waterproofing paint applied by brush or roller. It can be used on horizontal and vertical areas and gives a cleaner finish with no visible membrane lines.
➡Dulux Waterproofing is applied by brush and works together with a membrane. It is mainly used on horizontal areas, and membrane lines may remain visible depending on the surface and application.
