What if an entire neighborhood could function as one interconnected system?
Together with .creations Biobased Creations and the municipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch , we explored how cities can become more resilient to extreme weather by treating water as an asset rather than a problem to be drained away; the city as a sponge!
The future Ekofabriek district in Den Bosch demonstrates how water can shape urban living. Designed for around 2,000 residents, the neighborhood captures rainwater on connected rooftops, allowing it to flow gradually to the ground. Facades absorb, retain, and slow down rainfall, creating a resilient environment where plants, animals, and people can thrive. These principles are brought to life in the Possible Landscapes: City as Sponge model, featuring real flowing water and 3D-printed clay elements by .reef
The city’s relationship with its upstream river landscape is also integrated. A diverse roofscape reflects the river basin landscape, making visible how the city connects to, and depends on, the water systems beyond its boundaries.
Come and explore Possible Landscapes City as Sponge at HUB Bouw aan Morgen: From Materials to Society during Dutch Design Week.
