What is the value of hiring an interior architect?

It is not just about choosing materials, colours or furniture.

A substantial renovation involves a long chain of interconnected decisions. Layout, movement, light, functionality, materials and details all influence one another. Without a clear spatial vision, it is easy to make individual choices that do not create a coherent result.

We help clients identify its untapped potential, translate their needs into a strong design concept and navigate complex spatial decisions with greater clarity. The result is a space designed around how it should function, how the clients want to feel in it and how it can remain sustainable over time.

Our role is not simply to execute a look. We are a strategic design partner throughout the transformation: asking the right questions, challenging assumptions and bringing every element together into one considered interior.

Do you have a home, property or commercial space with more potential than its current layout reveals? We would be happy to explore what it could become.

Laan van NOI project: Coming Soon

A project we’ve been working on over the past few months: a full home renovation in an international neighbourhood of The Hague.

The historic property came with beautiful original details and architectural elements that we wanted to preserve and restore, while introducing a timeless, contemporary interior designed for modern everyday family life.

Swipe through for a glimpse of the process. Soon more on the finished project.

Finished project: Apartment 206, Utrecht

A blank canvas, transformed into a calm and personal home.

For this newly built apartment in Utrecht, we designed the complete interior for a young international couple starting a new chapter together.

Inspired by Japandi design principles, we worked with natural materials, organic textures and rounded forms to create a sense of calm throughout the apartment.
From creating a completely new layout to selecting the materials, furniture and styling, every element was considered as part of one balanced interior.

For Apartment 206, MIKKRO provided:

Some design details we simply keep coming back to.

Warm wood, unexpected colour, steel elements, rounded forms, graphic tiles, natural materials and custom storage. You’ll find them in different combinations throughout many of our projects.

Not because we want every interior to look the same, but because these elements give us different ways to add warmth, character, contrast and functionality to a space.

The result always depends on the home and the people living in it.

Swipe through for some of the details that have become part of our design language.

The tiles we chose vs. the end result

In case you haven’t noticed: we LOVE tiles!

Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, hallways and floors: tiles can be an exciting addition to an interior, but choosing the right ones can also be challenging.

Bringing samples into the space helps, but part of our role as interior architects is visualising how everything will come together. It is only when the materials, colours and light meet in the finished space that the tiles truly come alive.

Swipe through to see snapshots of our favourite tiled corners.

Save this post for your next renovation and don’t forget to add tiles to your interior wish list.

POV: this is what a week on a construction site looks like as an interior architect.

We started demolition on the first floor and are now moving down to the ground floor.

Renovations always come with unexpected discoveries. The importance is, how you can handle these. On the first floor, we found a beam and column hidden above the lowered ceiling. This means changing our plans and redesigning the bathroom, affecting its size, the position of the window and the overall height of the space.

Back to measuring and drawing! Finding a solution that supports the house’s structure while creating a layout that meets the vision.

This is what the first floor looks like after the first week.

Very happy with our contractor and construction team. Even in the middle of the demolition, they keep everything organised, showing the importance of working with people you trust.

Balancing work and leisure within 45 m².

Our Oude Pijp project presented a complex spatial challenge. The semi-basement apartment is enclosed by structural foundation walls, which meant we could not alter the layout or drill into the lower walls.

Every intervention therefore needed to be intentional and custom-designed, leaving the building’s foundations untouched.

The result shows that a compact home does not have to feel restrictive. With the right spatial decisions, and custom-design furniture, limited space can support different uses while remaining open, comfortable and connected.

Want to learn more about how we approach compact spaces as interior architects? DM us, we love a good lay-out challenge!
