Balance, proprioception & brain health 🧠⚖️
Let’s face it, we all need to work on our balance and proprioception as we get older!
Challenging our vestibular system, executive functioning and coordination while balancing is a great way to work on multitasking, body awareness and the communication between different areas of the brain.
Here are four fun balance challenges to try with your clients. You can adjust the complexity to suit the individual and progressively build confidence, coordination and stability.
1. Tiptoe balance + leg swing
Start by balancing on tiptoes. Add a swing of one leg, challenging your ability to maintain stability while your body is moving and responding to perturbations.
2. Moving backwards + forward hops
Step backwards into a single-leg balance, then hop forwards into another single-leg balance. Alternate between the two to challenge dynamic stability, coordination and confidence when moving backwards through space.
3. Tree pose + figure of eight
Balance in Tree Pose while drawing a figure of eight with the opposite arm and adding head movements.
Too much? 🤯🤪
Regress to just the arm movement or just the head movement, then build from there.
4. Stork twist + ball challenge
Balance on one leg in a stork twist , dropping and catching a ball, and moving it around your body.
A playful way to challenge balance, hand-eye coordination, attention and vestibular function. 🏀
The beauty of these exercises is that they can be adapted to create just the right amount of challenge. Start simple, then layer in movement, head turns or an additional task as confidence grows.
A little challenge, a little play, and a whole lot of learning.
